And it begins!

Heard a report that a few kings have been spotted in the Joss Hole.  Let the madness begin.  LOL

Posts like this make me real nostalgic for my place up there. Loved those long August walks on the river with no one else around---and darned few fish--if any.
Even without many fish it was GREAT.

August, and especially late August into very early Sept, used to be very quiet on the river with few fish and fewer fisherpersons.
Then came a couple of unusual very early and very publicized large runs. These, along with great notice on the web, changed things.
Now folks think that two fish reported in Joss and four reported last week in a pool upriver signal a run.
Every little pod down low is made to look like a run even though above the flats they spread out to the point of being unlikely to locate.
Great for the local folks involved in the fishery but not for those who think they will hit pay dirt.
Go up - enjoy the place and have fun but leave your expectations for, other than a nice experience in the outdoors in a great area, at home.
If even one or two 'riva masters' who know how to CATCH get lucky and  report it there will be no room left in the ballpark-lol.

Back in my one trip a year King days it was always late Sept.-- we sometimes hit them and some times found slim pickings.
Usually some in LFZ by then. Although even early Oct  in 'da zone' been iffy the past couple of seasons.
Poor runs lately have made them hard to predict.
My favored time was always late Oct into early Nov but its been poor the past couple of years without decent Steel and Ho runs.
Nov Hos became my favored catch -mixed in with some Steel.
Now am back to the once a year thing ( although hoping for two) and will be reading reports from REGULARS and weather patterns before making last minute plans.
Lodging will be an issue doing that but its worth a few miles drive to increase the odds. Good luck 'fisher' as that was usually an ok time -over time.
Recall the get together at Andys when his brother came in from DSR telling us about that GREAT early Ho run.

Looking at the weather so far in August, cooler than usual,I'm hoping it continues and the water temps are cool in Sept unlike what they were last year. There were plenty of fish in the LFZ last year but they had lock jaw but there were few in the UFZ.Then they closed the LFZ and I went home
SO judging from the lake reports this year I expect there to be a decent run and IF the water is cool I think the Salmon will be frisky and snapping at my flies.Time will tell!
Mentioning that get together at Andys brought back good memories!

Unfortunately, they commonly predict good runs based on lake reports lol
Kinda like judging a run by the ballpark stringers IMHO.
Hope they are right and we have a normal season.

What is salmon season again ? Lol. Or fishing for that matter ?
My boat has weeds growing in and around it. Everything I have heard or seen is Mexico bay area is a mess . Last week the road leading to the launch was underwater, again. Folks who have been fishing north and east of Oswego are still trying to figure out what's going on. Yes Oswego and west are banner.
One question arose was how the highest lake level will effect out flowing tribs.
I don't even know if I will put my boat into the great lake ontario this season. Time and conditions are a struggle for me this season. My dock at the marina are no more.
In the scope of things I surly hope to share and flog some water from the bank on your dates Jack. In the long range prospective, I'm trying to put together a January or February adventure again.
So when is silly season ? Maybe I'll tear away a day to join the circus. .

Yes, the rumor mill has been indicating presence of AS since May (I have seen some pix from reliable reporters), with a few Skams around as well.  But I left the Spey and the spinning tackle home, and there was just too much water for the one handed rod.  I'm going back next week to do some work for friends, and I'll be trying again, hopefully on lower water.  And I'll bring the canoe for the reservoir in case Murphy blesses me with the high water again.

    Welll- it actualy IS beginning.
Reports today of a dozen, or possibly 2 dozen, Kings moved in.
Guess that will equate to a few hundred fisherfolks in the next week   lol.
But its IS starting to start - good luck to all this year.

Also--- Good luck to Rich out on the boat

Well, it was rough seas most of the day. 1 guy was puking and spent most of the time lying in the cabin.
As for the fishing on fire ? Gesh. We marked very little. Fished deep 250 fow and shallow 100 fow.
Never moved a rod. Radio was super quiet, 1 here , 1 there.
Maybe that big blow yesterday scattered them , I don't know.
Oh, we did see a king keep jumping clear outta the water in front of us for like 5 mins.
    Otherwise, big skunk for me

Yes it did have a lamprey attached. The guy in my boat wanted to try and net the salmon, it almost jumped in the boat.
As for the fishing, I just think it was an off day due to the big blow yesterday. When we just pulled outta the boat launch, everyone struggled.
Hopefully it will turn on tomorrow. The lake finally laid down about 4pm.
    Believe me, I'm still rocking.

Today the DSR is reporting Kings running(not big numbers but the most so far) and a few were played with one brought up for cleaning. With the cool temps forecasted I think the real run will start any day now and there should be plenty waiting for me on the 27th when I get there.Time to get my gear ready!
Hope you have a better day on the lake Rich.

Andrew is on the board with the salmon count. He got a nice 27 lb hen aboard the Mae yesterday. We marked a ton of fish but could only get 1 to bite .
    Fun day for sure

We parted ways late last evening. Your name came up more than a few times.
The Daisy is back home at my compound. It was a fun trip, makes me think about next year already. I'm going back to marina style, it's just so much easier.
Maybe you will come sometime for a boat ride :)

    Report :
Wednesday had a big blow. IMO it scattered a bunch of fish.
Thursday : we trolled for hrs in 4 -5 foot seas. Blank screen, 2 greenhorn guys who got seasick. That sucked as did the fishing.
Friday was the day, we headed out in 2 footers banging our way to Oswego. Marked a ton of fish , seen a fish netted to keep our hopes up. Shutdown and drifted for lunch up by Sandy pond. That was the rejuvenation needed.
Once we got back to fishing the screen was full and we hooked up.

I will bbe looking forward to seeing friends again soon

Ok so now that's outta my system and looking forward towards next season, it's time for a change. I've had the boat for 5 years . Always felt is was bad MOJO to change a boats name but now it's time. The name Daisy Mae will be retired and now I will call her my own. The next time she hits the water will be under her new name. Soulshine !!
