Neighbor tells me I don't even need to be plowed this weekend in Pulaski/Richland.
More inside painting and then apple tree trimming and some outside house keeping chores- perhaps even a wet line on Monday.
Here in Ct despite some snow  spots here and there the worms were out in my yard tonight.

At my place the ground is still for the most part covered.  The parts that are not are mud pits.  We have officially entered the season between winter and spring MUD

Night crawlers will come out anywhere that it is snow free and the temperature is above 40.  We're not seeing that here yet, but for Finger Lakes 'bows, crawlers aren't really the better bait until well into the spawning, and that could be the end of April this year.  My lack of eggs means Tuesday AM will be Power bait or glo bugs, at least until Sutton opens.

We are supposed to get heavy rain tonight so Tuesday's opener may be a blow out of the local reservoir outlet streams.  Still a lot of ice on the ponds and lakes but open water is slowly expanding.
My go to rig in the early season is a light weight spinning outfit with Blue Fox or Mepps spinner tipped with a Gulp Alive 2 1/2" Emerald Shiner on the treble.

If I were fishing either brookies or hatchery browns, I would like that a lot.  In the finger lakes you are only allowed one point, and a lot of the water is crowded for anything other than a short chuck and duck 8 foot drift.  And the 'bows are in spawning, and they are very partial to eggs early, although I know folks who like minnies, wood grubs, even cocktail onions have been used in the past.  Once the water warms up a little , crawlers come on, and flies start to work also, especially as the crowds thin out.

Today was one of those work inside days. MUD season is full blown with steady rain all day. Played atv with grandson in am and picked up 1,000 sq of laminate flooring.
Put ice gear away as well. 4-1 don't mean that much anymore in my age . Probably catch a striper before a stream trout. Come may, it's game on again :)

Its about the tradition Tuna.
I went to the Finger lakes rainbow run trout season opener in 1956  as a 5 year old.

There were no year round tribs back then and it was a sleepless night  followed by the long ride with the older kids and adult.
Caught my first (a dropback) the next year when one ate my plunked crawler while I had fallen asleep.
Then I needed to catch one on purpose to redeem myself.
Took a couple of years to do it.

Flow cast on waterline is 750 through Sunday... something tells me they oughtta open some gates up now... like right now... river is going vertical on the pineville gauge with natural runoff... that reservoir needs to start draining!!!

With all this torrential rain I have a feeling I'll be fishing in flooded timber on my local outlet stream.  The same happened about four years ago and it made fishing very difficult.  Drowning some worms on the opener looks like a best better with this rain and run off.

HT,

I don't consider the FL 'bows stream trout.  They average 2-3 lbs, have to be 15" to keep, used to be 3 limit, now 1, I';ve cauight them up to 8 lbs and seen the over 10.  I go for the Naples Derby opening day, as 2B says tradition.  Maybe I'll get down one or two more times there, but more likely to just stay home with the late LO run really just taking off.  Stream trout starts late April with the Hendricksons.

It used to be tradition for dad and I to hit the local ditches on 4-1. Most all places were native trout ditches. These days I really have no traditions . Try to get as much work on the house done while conditions are poor and fish when I can- want ..
Somehow my wife got wind of ole 1/0 s post.
Got me putting a fresh coat of paint inside my shack of a house.

Smaller tribs have broken through the ice and brownish green in color... Tuesday in the 50's is gonna do some damage... res must be low as they are still keeping the flow at 750

I thought that about the res  too DB when I saw them keep it at 750.   Though the temps today were not quite cold enough to cause major damage  next week the big thaw should start.  Maybe I will get to see some bare ground  by next week.

Youre definitely right gerry...As a child my father took us fishing in the western Catskill streams of sullivan and Delaware county... Trout opener was often a cold rainy day with higher flows on those streams...

Re:Weather thread 2014/03/30 18:56:18 (permalink)
been another grey and rainy day here.. big creeks and mighty hudson are high and muddy.. low lying flood watch ..  some of the headwaters though gotta be fishable on 4-1 .. I'm quite sure a few lunker butter belly browns will fall to tradition.. I wouldn't mind seeing what those catt or berkshire streams fish.. Sawkill and green river (both I call brooks) were my early spots.. Gotta stay high..

Local weather looks like cool and rainy.. I will be busy with house work until a little sun dries the mud so I can play in the yard and the mighty Hudson lets me scout the islands with the yak..
Going to be a boring few weeks for me, unless I get a itch for the SR.. Who knows..

Wind is howling like a mother.

I need to get a few loads of gravel for the drive and spread it once it dries.  Fix the lawn from the plowing scallops. Re seed and feertalize.  Spread the winters manure on the hay fields    Then it is time to get the gardens ready.  They will probably be small this year due to the hopefully upcoming surgery.   I usually don't fish as much in the summer and spring, but a few trips onto Oneida will probably happen.

I have Wed off, so I am going to try to hit one of the zones.  Depends on traffic in each

That high wind will pull a lot of water out of the pack, less coming down to blow out the streams!

Well today I pulled a 4 track tractor , a D-9 dozer and a haul truck out of our MUDDY landfill . It's plenty sloppy here . I'm dumping 300 tons of lime dust down hoping to sop some of the mud up enough to take the 4- track tractor and scraper out there.
I hate MUD season !!!!

I took a ride this afternoon to check the conditions on a number of reservoir outlet streams.  The conditions are very good considering we had 2-4 inches of rain since Saturday.  Plan on hitting one of my favorite spots at first light.  I'll be nice to feel a thump and a headshake on the end of my line after this brutally long winter.

Right on Gerry. It's been a pretty decent snow melt for such a long winter. It did rain hard and plenty but as my observations of the mighty Hudson and its tribs the waters are taking it well. Head high and you should find clear water, well except for that red clay in some Catt streams.
Good luck tomorrow , hope you catch a lunker

Sunny and cool.  I went up after work and did not even get a head shake.  Things are drying up a bit.  I see the first peak of grass in the yard and the drive is not as sloppy.

WOW--Spring seems to be springing in the lake affect zone.  When leaving  yesterday there was still a foot of snow on the  yard and the Syrup guys were filling jugs on my trees.
Winterized 'just in case'  and  hoped it was the last time this year.
Just checked the 10 day for the area and see that winterizing may have been wasted time and money- lol.
Now to get the 'do list' caught up  in the new house & will be back up in 2 weeks when the predictably high runoff will hopefully be down to a reasonable level for a Spring 'fish on' trip. HOPE HOPE

Stellar day out side. Still wicked muddy but the wind is light and the sun bright so it is slowly drying up. Working in a tee shirt sure feels great and hope it don't get to hot too quick

Re:Weather thread 2014/04/01 20:38:50 (permalink)
A nice day for the opener of trout season.  Not much to report other than the water is extremely cold and the fish are lethargic.  When I arrived at my favorite spot around 6:30AM I found it occupied by six other fishermen.  I hooked one fish but lost him after a brief encounter.  Close enough to see that he was a fat, healthy two year old brown.
There is still a lot of ice on the reservoir about a mile up river from my spot and the spill way is running hard.  This week's weather should bring temps up and hopefully turn the fish on.  Three hours in ankle deep water and the legs didn't want to work.  Plan to hit the same area tomorrow.  Hopefully the results will be better.

Definitely a little more pep in everyone's step and tuna short sleeves sure did feel nice in the late afternnoon...even though there's still 6-12" of snow in the back half of my backyard... water is steadily flowing every where and as most have thought it is a slow and steady melt... hopefully it won't get too out of hand... wetting a line??? Don't see it happening for me too much... maybe a small shot this weekend. The one good thing is there are many options of target waters right now... unless we blow out after Fridays rain event...
