Planer Boards build or buy?
Setting up Ranger boat with planer mast. Should we buy or build boards? If buy which ones? If build where do we find good plans?

This might get you started greenhead. also search "homemade planer boards" and you might find a few more posts. I def. think building your own planer boards are the way to go. There pretty easy and you can give them your own special touch. Our boards are redwood but you can use pine as well. Redwood is pretty hard to find. There are several different sizes and ways to build boards. you can also make them collapsible. Try googling homemade planer boards. I found some videos and directions when building mine. Good luck. http://forums.fishusa.com/m_394774/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#394774

I would imagine it would work well, but there's really no reason to spend the extra money. I know I have less than $20 in my set and they're at least 3 years old and still look like they did the day I finished them other than some handling scratches.

Amish Outfitters Azek boards a little expensive but they pull hard, my time is worth more than the time it takes to make them.

All depends on what your towing with your boards. If your just pulling 2 Deep Divers with mono a side then homemade or any will do.. If your pulling 3 or 4 long lead cores (7-10 colors) or 300 coppers.. You want to spend the $$$$ I can't speek for the amish boards... never ran them. But Aurora Lite boards are the only one's I'll run.. You have to drive the boat to them to getem back..LOL http://www.auroralitestackle.com/ MM
What's another hunded dollors, when we are spending thousands, I mean THOUSANDS.

The amish boards pull almost as good as the auroras, I run the long coppers on lake O without any problems, and cores/ weights up to 6 oz with four lines on a side without issues.

mine cost about 14 dollars to make and it took less than 2 hrs i would build them instead of buying, but i like to make most of my own stuff seems to feel better when you catch something on it.

I built my own collapsible boards last spring for about $60 in two hours. They pull HARD and i can run 3 deep diving LARGE musky plugs at 4.5mph+ on each side without a problem. They ride low in the water (weighted) and don't take flight off wave crest. Couldn't afford the Aurora boards but I can say they are great!
Musky, all other fish are just bait! Ask me about getting DirecTV hooked up on your boat or camper

We made our own that work great. The big issue with ours though, they were too top heavy and flipped on us once in 3 footers causing the board to come gliding extremely fast in the wrong direction. Biggest disaster I've ever seen. Every line got tangled up severly and the string snapped our antenna in half! The solution, we drilled out numerous holes in the top half to make them much lighter up top. Haven't had any problems since. Definitely consider that if you try making them

Whatever you decide to do, make or buy them be sure they are collaspible. If not, you will be tripping all over them in your ranger.

I build my own. Less than $20. Only downside with mine is that they don't collapse. I never saw the Amish outfitters boards, if their boards are made 1/2 as good as their "buggy bags", then they'll probably last you the rest of your life.

I've been wanting to buy a set of the amish outfitter boards, anyone know where to buy them, other than online. Some place in the Erie,Conneaut or Ashtabula area.

So the plans show make the boards 6" high. Reading the link to the old post some people recommended 8". Should I stick to these plans or go 8???? If I go 8 what is the inside width? Thanks!
