    Dove, I'm kind of curious...
and don't take this the wrong way, cause I'm NOT flaming or bashing, I promise.

Elk is a pretty small creek that runs pretty shallow.
You can drive from  the mouth to McKeen in less than 30 minutes.
There's at least a dozen easy access  points from the mouth to McKeen.

    If someone didn't tell you,

"there all the way up to XYZ spot"

Would go ever go look for yourself?
Or would you deem it "not worth your time" to take a peek for yourself?

    Just curious

If you looked at my post, it answered your question. as for specific spots I'm not sure you'd get them for many here. If I were to say they're stacked at McKean, the lunch wagon would be there makin a killing. You asked how far, I said all the way. These fish in good water move very quickly at nite. Not trying to be smart but if there's good water there's fish usually and I'm not sayin make the charge to Struechen Flats or Sterritania not just yet or Millfair on walnut. Dave

I wondered the same thing. So when dad and I were done fishing, we drove to the zoo for a giggle and to see how many fish were there compared to before the rain then stopped at some upper areas on the way back to the Boro. With good flow the steelies can run 5 miles in a day if they want to. Not trying to be a smart ****, but if you are a distance away I can tell you its worth the trip, but its low and clear right now with inactive fish for the most part. I went 2 for 4 this morning, and there was plenty of fish around.

    I wasn't being mean, Dove.

    I was genuinly curious.

It's a 1 1/2 hour drive one way for me to Elk.
There's been many times over the years I was catching steel WAY up stream on Elk the second week of Sept.
More often than not, there were only a handful of anglers up that far and good numbers of fish.
Other times I've taken the drive up stream  and found zero fish.

Point is, if I had waited to hear if there were fish up that far and not looked for myself, I wouldn't of been rewarded with a bunch of fish all to myself.
(or at least very little pressure)

If there were zero fish, i only lost an hour or so to find out

as far as some of our friends "that make fishing in erie miserable sometimes",
I'd suggest it's a result of frustration of the lack of effort most of the masses are willing to put into the sport.

Its called FISHING not CATCHING. I live about the same time away let me go up and spend my off day searching for fish and solitude to just post it here and invite the state to the area. Are you for real? Wouldnt it be more rewarding for you to actually find fish on your own than being spoonfed info? Give me a break. There is a flow chart that you can gage the Elk on. Take an educated guess on how far up they can be. If this is your first year going after these fish I am sorry for coming on so strong. But if you have been doing this for longer just go to the project waters at Walnut with the rest of the nuckleheads.

Hey Thadd, I can appreciate your situation in that you don't feel like making the drive to fish an area where there are no steelhead. I'm sure by now after reading the reply's that most guys are a little sensitive about giving out locations of where the fish are. Elephanthead and Mr. Fisherman said it right that in reality, when there is good flow the fish can move great distances at night so it can be hard to pinpoint them. I have to drive 7 hours to get there so when I go, I always plan for at least 4 days with the first day spent just finding where the fish are. This means covering alot of water. I'm planning on going up over Thanksgiving wknd for 5 days - thinking that by then they should be pretty well spread out and hopefully they are still there. But you know what - I really won't care if they're not - it's still better than a day's work!!  Take care buddy and tight lines!!!!!

One thing to keep in mind, there are not that many "easy" access sites on the upper portions of the streams, so stop by a few and see what is going on.  You will know pretty quickly if there are fish there or not.  There is no need to walk for miles to deterimine if you are going to find fish.

Can anyone please tell me where some easy places are to fish for someone that can not get around to well.  I'm going fishing with a friend that has never gone steelhead fishing because he can not walk that good.  I thought about off of the wall at walnut.  Please let me know if there are any other places.  Thanks.

gander mountain would probly have one, if u cant find one long enough bolt another handle to it to make it longer... just make sure you lift the net out of the water vertically, dont try it horizontally, its heavy then hell and your net might break..
