Did anyone go to work today???

I got to Walnut creek this morning around 6:45 and was absolutely amazed at the number of people on the creek.  It was packed.  I thought they were giving away free money or something.

I ran into a long time steelie fisherman; he told me and his buddies were veterans - i.e. ,"...they had been fishing for steelies for about 3 years now...".  According to this gentleman, "The crowds were terrible... and it ain't what it used to be..."  I had to chuckle to myself...  I have been fishing the tribs off and on for over 20 years, and can say, definitely times have changed.

Anyway, the creek was coming down, it had some good color, less leaves than last night and some fresh fish.  Orange glo bugs seemed to be the ticket today, the bigger the better.

If you are planning to fish Walnut today or tomorrow or God forbid you are evening thinking about this weekend, be ready for armpit to armpit fishing with a fair number of people who seem to have no clue as to what they are doing.

Good luck and may your reels be screaming....

And that's definitely been the problem this year with everyone waiting for the rains to bring the tribs up.  Everyone's figuring the "run" is on and they're all coming at once.

I guess the rain has more to do with the fisherman than the fish...  The fish have been in the streams, albeit only the lower ends, since early September.  I think the rain brought on a run of fisherman...

Hey bug, in you're opinion, do you think there was enough rain to get them to the legion hole? I would love to get away from the crowds. I know that everyone and thier mother is gonna be up, but atleast ill have room to swing a fly. If i do make it up it will be tuesday or wednesday.

    PAsalmonangler,

I really don't know, and just asking the question most likely will bring out a crowd to get away from the crowd.  I would anticipate most of the popular spots will have people this weekend.  It seems that everyone has been waiting for the rain, and now that it is here, so will be the fisherman.

Holy crap!  You actually managed to have one hooked in the mouth!  And I thought you were just passing out flies to skilled fishermen via dorsal delivery.

Yup.  good thing K16 wasn't there.  Might a' been some gun play.

It takes balls to have someone net your FOULED fish, then have someone else in the hole "remind" you that foul-hooked fish aren't legal to keep, THEN put it on the stringer and go right back to fishing.

Was that picture from yesterday or today(23/24)? Really clear water after so much rain. Are the creeks in that good of shape today?

Yup.  Skip blurred out the peripheral image so as not to frighten everyone with the images of the crowds.

One last thing before I head for the post office...

Bug, you should have seen the low-beards.  1/4 oz. split shot an inch above the eggsac stuck on the size 8 treble hook.  I believe it was their version of Spoon's Yankee fly.  Every drift ended with a jerk as if they were setting the hook on a 100lb catfish.  There were several fish in the hole swimming with their baits stuck to their backs.

To my horror, as I'm landing a hefty male, young Low-beard next to me KICKS the daylights out of my fish punting it way up onto the bank.  Not once, not twice, but three swift kicks.  On a fish I'm about to release!!!  I nearly kicked him.

It's nice to see their "ethics" are as consistent on the streams as in the woods.

T.T. I would not have expected anything different.  The rip and strip method of steelie fishing is alive.  The orange glo bug and skein bugger were hot this morning, along with some brown egg sacks.  Go low and slow, feel the tap and set the hook...  Know what I mean?

Just got back from Edinboro this afternoon and took a look at upper Elk on the way home.  It is pretty low already.  I guess that was to be expected with the lack of rain this season.  The ground is doing a good job of sapping up the water.  Gonna need some more blowouts for sure.

I noticed that Walnut had dropped a couple of feet since yesterday afternoon.  If we don't get any more rain, we will be back to where we where earlier in the week, just a lot more people.

Stupid is as stupid does....  It was a good day to be on the streams if you know how to fish and were lucky enough to get a good spot.  It was most likely pretty disappointing if you are new to steelie fishing and did not know what to do.  It is tough to stand next to a person who is pounding fish and you can't get a bite.  The streams will be back to low and clear by the weekend.  If we get some more rain, they will go back up and blow out.  Good luck if you decide to join the lunatic asylum we call the tribs.  Bring lots of flies and bait and a HUGE amount of patience.  You will need.

Skein Bugger?  Gotta pic of this skein bugger?  I tied a crystal meth top with a half egg bottom.  If it works do I get to name it?  Is the skein bugger yours?

eggsac is the first I saw tie skein buggers.

Simple wooly bugger, white tail, white hackle.  Orange chenille.

That's all it is, and they've worked great for me too.

D-nymph pretty much explained the skein bugger.  I tie mine with an orange tail, but is the traditional way to do it.
