80+ landed???

Read on the fishing report page some guys landed 80+ steelhead . Now it didn't say how many were (caught in the mouth) and I'm not suggesting anything but .  When your fishing in a bathtub oh well I better not go there.

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

If you read the report, FIVE guys, THREE days. That's 17 fish per man, a little less than 6 per day.  Absolutely believable, and actually not particuarly good.

Steelies are to be caught, but 80 in a day is not realistic.

Once again, what spoon said...  80 between five guys in three days isn't really much to brag about...  I probably landed two dozen or so myself on sunday, seen a few others do just as well.  At this point there are so many **** fish stacked up down low, its hard NOT to catch one.

I guess that I should have read the post a bit more carefully....  As already stated that catch rate is not really great, but some folks would consider it to be pretty good.  I wonder how many they "had on"?  The other day I was fishing a spot and it was, "fish on" time and time again.  With a few exceptions, it should have been, "fish snagged in the tail, or dorsal fin, or belly....."

For the sometime, occasional steelie fisherman, you don't have to set the hook every time you think you have a fish.  A gentle picking up of the rod, wait for the head shake and then set the hook will  cut way down on  foul hooked fish.  Yes you will miss a few fish this way, but you also won't be chasing after a ton of fish hooked in the back or belly.

BTW - if a steelie goes tearing off down the hole once you set the hook, most of the time it means it is foul hooked.  A steelie hooked in the mouth usually will give you a good head shake first and then will take off.  As for me, it is that violet head shake that is the best part of the fight.

Another tip, if you are consistently foul hooking fish in the belly, you most likely have too much weight on and as you are lifting you rod at the end of the drift you are sticking the fish.  Take some of the weight off and be more gentle when you lift you line at the end of the drift.  If you are hooking a lot of fish in the dorsal fins and back, you may have too little weight on.  Try adding a small, tiny split shot to get the fly down some.

Just a couple of simple things can cut way down on foul hooked fish.
