Little Cleo's

What size is best for steelhead fishing at the mouths if the creeks with little cleo's? 1/3oz or 2/5oz sizes?

Either size, there is only a 1/15 difference. I prefer a little lighter, 1/4 ounce. A lighter spoon, allows you to keep the lure up in the water column with a slower retrieve. I usually like a slower retrieve in stained water, and low light. A bit faster, on clear sunny conditions.

Spoon type also plays a part. Crocs, tend to stay "up" better on a slow retrieve than do Cleos, or KO's.

4 oz. size # 2 treble.. that should hook something...  I've never seen a steelhead   "landed" with a spoon in it's mouth  .. onlyt advantage you have is that you can chuck it 30 yards  further into the lake than the  egg sac users..

Then you obviously have not used them much, or seen them used on the lakefront. I've landed many hundreds, and only ONE was hooked anywhere other than in the mouth.

LOL, no they prefer a 1/2 pound of lead (I guess it's tin and sometimes spark plugs now) and orange pieces of foam/sponge, or for the fly fishers.... carpet.  Much cheaper than spoons.

I agree with spoon.  I like the small of the two.  Bigger one for more visibility and better vibration, smaller one for clear water.

10 pts..  friend of mine just can't seem to grasp the idea that a trout will hit a spoon either.  Too funny.

Don't give me that evil eye  steeliesniper  (hahaha)    no seriously  I'm from Pa not NY.   I had a bad experience with a few guys  chucking spoons at Trout Run  and  pumping thire rods on every lit bump..    No offense to those  successful  Cleo's users...

I have seen a steelhead caught on a spoon at trout run on one of the 2 times I was there. Steelhead sure do hit spoons, they eat A WHOLE BUNCH of minnow in the lake. Pike also eat mostly all minnows thats why they eat spoons so willingly.

I have used cleo's and had very good luck catching steelies on them..  I have casted  or trolled them behind my canoe and have found 1/4 in silver and green  or silver and blue are the takers.. Never foul hooked one using a cleo.. They hit hard and are usually hooked solid...
