Yes nets will be allowed.  The phrase "to hand" basically means that the angler can secure the fish in his possession long enough to record the length.  Do your friends have names so I can add them to the list?  (the list is about the 6th post on this subject.)  The big thing is to be prepared to be challenged.  Right now we are looking at a time from: 11:Am check-in.  Start @ 13:00  fish till 17:30  back at check-in by 18:00 Award prizes at 18:30 +/-.  This is all subject to change depending on the consensus of the participants.  We are trying to arrange for a place to eat either before or after the Contest.  I/We are very flexible.  We want to make as many people happy as possible.

Justin8688,
The powerline hole is on the East side of Elk about 1/4 mile above the Elk Launch/Picnic Area.  To get there you turn in at the Gas Station/bait shop/Convenience Store and just follow the road down the hill.  It's the parking lot just after the campgrounds.  BUT we are trying to get a covered pavillion somewhere else along the creeks to make life a little easier.  We will keep everything posted and up to date when it's final.

chasinrainbows,
Sorry, a jig is not a fly.  It is an Irish dance best done when inebriated.  Actually this is a fly fishing contest and using a jig would give you a distinct advantage.  But if you would like to play and you don't have a rod . . .  I will be more that willing to loan you one if you want to participate.  Hey, it doesn't cost anything to try!  Come on out and meet the fellows.  You know, Younguru asked me the same question last year.

I have several fly rods that anyone can burrow and I would be willing to help them learn to use them.  I do have one question.  Can you use a fly on a noodle rod?  This is a one fly contest, but I don't know that you have to use a fly rod and reel.

Also, if anyone would like a fly to use, let me know.  I would be more than willing to supply the fly for anyone.  I have a few killer patterns...

A fly can be fished on a noodle rod.  It isn't easy but it can be done.  The biggest reason for not allowing jigs is the fact that their added weight makes for an easier presentation in some waters and a longer (generally) casting distance.  Come on down.  A wooly bugger is a fly, and with a float (sorry "strike indicator") will generally give enough weight for a semi-decent cast.  You can come and fish with us if you want to.  Or, Bug or I will loan you a rod.  Maybe it's time to teach an old dog new tricks.  Have you heard of "beginners luck"?

inds, i am getting interested.  did not think to use a fly on a noodle rod.  is it possible to use soft shot to get it down?  (dumb question? from a rook).

rapala11,
Soft shot, hard shot, a large rock!  Whatever you think will catch fish.  The biggest problem with a noodle, as I see it, is getting light enough line for a good presentation.  Heck you could use #50 pound line on a fly rod but it would be like slapping the water with a rope.  If you want to, Bug and I will loan out rigged fly rods.  You get to choose the fly.  I have about 2,000 so your choice will be limited.  The object of this thing is more of a chance to get a group of guys together to enjoy, and promote, fly fishing on the tribs than it is to WIN the contest.  To me the prizes are incidental, the message is important.  Plus, if you feel uncertain with a fly rod I will try to pair you up with a good fly fisherman or, heck, you can be my partner.  I can definately show you how to get the fly on the water.  It'll be up to you to catch the fish.

justin8688,
You're in the right time zone.  But remember we may be somewhere else.  We are looking for a picnic area with a pavillion.  But don't worry we will post the exact location and post a map of sorts.

KJH807,
OK, you're in.  There is no specified area where you must fish.  But where ever you do fish it must be open to all.  No fishing on posted waters.  Chasinrainbows:  Sounds good to me, if it makes you happy.

I am not against fishing in the rain! In fact, some of my best days ever are in the rain. If for some reason it gets canceled and we have to fish sunday, I wont be able to stay the entire time. We have to come back to town to pick our daughter up from the grandparents at a reasonable time.

BTW: Talked Kelsea(girlfriend) into getting into it. This is her first time ever in Erie, but when its free, why not. She does fly fish with me here at home, I wouldnt be suprised to see her do ok. She has a heavy hand, no respect for tippet, lol.

Jeremy,
Oh, we will do rain. . .  8 feet of water in a trib where there is normally 2 feet we will not do.   I don't want anyone to take a chance and be injured just for a rod & reel.  The biggest thing to remember is that you are responsible for your own behavior and safety.  We will use common sense.  Hopefully the weather will co-operate like last year.  It was GREAT!  Tell your lady that I am pleased to have her come and try her luck.  Looking forward to meeting you.

erieboogieman,
Sounds OK, how old is your daughter?  Will she need any special considerations?  Does she need a kids fly rig or is she a teenager.  We're trying to make this as all inclusive as possible.
