Fall One Fly
Gentlemen,
I am pleased to announce that we are going to try to have a fall One Fly contest. The rods have been made, the prize flys are available, and there are other prizes coming. The rules will be the same as in previous years and will follow. I am being very cautious here and I have arranged with Bughawk to run the thing if for any reason I can't make it. He has, or will have all the prizes.
The basic rules are very simple: THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE! ! ! All fishing must be done on public waters so everyone has an equal chance. You get one fly of your choice. You supply the fly. We will record it.
If you lose your fly, you are out of the competition. But, if you are able to recover your fly you may re-tie and continue. No re-rigging allowed. I also ask that each fisherman bring along one more fly of the type they are fishing to be given to the person who is the first "Out" in the contest. Once you are out you may continue fishing "Out of competition" to assist your partner. Who knows; you may still win a box of flies if he is very, very good.
There will be two man teams, chosen at random about 30 minutes before the start of the test. Each team member will verify the catch and length of the others' fish. Hopefully most prople will practice Catch & Release but you may keep a limit if you wish. The only exceptions to the team rule are: if a fisherman has a minor child (under 16) he wants to fish with as a partner, or a female who wants to fish with their significant other.
You may use any rod/reel combo you wish but it is a fly fishing test.
All flies must be presented to the judges (myself & Bughawk) before the test and be marked on the line. No spinners, no live bait, no powerbait., NO JIGS!
Scoring will be as follows: 1 point for every inch of fish caught, by .25 of an inch. ( Caught is considered as being brought to hand and unhooked.) Since they must be measured, that is prety well assured.
Points are as follows: Steelhead: 1 point per inch; Brown trout: 2 points per inch; All other fish .25 points per inch.
Prizes will be awarded at a place to be determined at the start/finish. The prizes will be:
1st place: A completely refurbished bamboo rod (done by me)
1st place team: Two loaded fly boxes donated by Jagfly Co.
2d place: Scientific anglers 5wt rod & reel set (complete)
3d place: Vintage fiberglass rod and appropriate reel
Biggest fish: 50 flies and a case.
Best junior: a complete Shakespeare fly rod combo
Tentative dates will be as follows: Saturday October 6th with rain make-up on Sunday the 7th. Check in from 11:00am to 12:30 with hot dogs and sodas provided, anybody wishing to provide additional food please sign up on the extra post; Fish: from 1:00 to 5; Prizes given out at 6:00pm. The only questions I have are: Are the dates good? Afternoon? I personally prefer afternoon to give people a chance to "scout" the water. All problems will be addressed by the judges and the decisions of the judges are final.
I am suggesting that we all meet at the pavillion at Girard Boro Park unless somebody has a better suggestion that can hold 30(+) cars. I am fairly flexable on the places and the times. If you can help out with the organizing on the Erie end I will be very grateful.
The purpose of this exercise is to provide everybody with a chance to test their skill and maybe win a prize for their prowess. I will provide sodas and water, and score cards. I would suggest that people bring a pen and maybe a digital camera to record their catches.
If there are any people who doubt their ability: Come on down, I will try to pair you with an experienced angler.
I would like to limit this to 40 people, if possible, but I can make arrangements for more if necessary.
Every participant will be responsible for their own safety and obeying of fishing laws, rules and regulations. Don't do anything dangerous, illegal, or stupid.
OK, who wants on the list? Or who has comments?
Prizes are posted on page 3 of thread! Permit has been granted so we can have more than 40 people!
