Catching any LEAF fishes today????

I took a peek at the weather for Erie Pa and see winds forcast at 25 to 35 mph.

Figure there must be plenty "hook ups"....

side note to our friends who would like to be Trout Gawds.

If your rig isn't sensitive enough, or your concentration on your float/strike indicator/flyline isn't good enough  to detect when a submerged leaf hits your line/tippet or fly/bait, your missing LOTS of steelie bites.
(hows that for a r-u-n..o-n sentance)
hehehehehe

if you're not setting the hook submerged leaves,
you're missing LOTS of "real"  bites on a light bite day.
That's one of the reasons why some catch a bunch-o-fish and others work all day for a couple

No leaf-fish for me.  After catching hell yesterday for fishing 3 times this week, I'm catching a ton of honey-do's today.

You're a good man T.T.  That's what weekends are for.   Oh, and by the way, the leaves wern't too bad when we left the stream @ 1PM yesterday. I suppose that's all changed today w/the wind.  Dave

I can truely attest to light bites as experienced by myself over the past couple of weeks. There were times I would watch my bait moving through the current and actually see fish mouth the bait and never feel a nudge on the flyline. I watched trout inhale a minnow and before I could set the hook it was spit out. Several times my float would stop and thinking it was hung up, I gently lifted the line and was surprised to find a fish on the other end.

Each time I learn something new about any type of fishing I realize how much I don't know and how much more there is to learn. I've learned a lot from reading this board both about what to do, and what not to do.

Its been an interesting evening so heres a little off the wall. I figure for the oak leaves to go to a squirrel tail or deer hair pattern. The maples really react to a pancake emerger, tan in color w/ brown edge accents. What's your take on the best flies for these leaves and the other varities out there. Do you use barbless and can these be smoked to bring out their true flavor or is there a sappy flavor and not worth the time.

Serve them with acorn stuffing and crab apple sauce.

Or, you can do what peacy does... just smoke 'em.

One of the best pieces of advice I've gotten, especially when nymphing, is that when you notice the slightest tap or your indicator starts moving irregularly, set the hook. My catch rate doubled on the local trout streams when I grasped this concept. Same goes for the fly line, too, as mentioned.

There is a misunderstanding among some that if your indicator doesn't sink under there isn't a fish on and thus miss alot of fish.

By the way, I caught a fair share of leaves today. Real pain, too, when the wind is blowing 25mph and your trying to get a hold of your leader to remove the leaf as it flails endlessely in the wind.

I spent the summer tossing a popper with a nymph dropper to blue gills.  The popper was so small that a beadhead would just about sink the popper.  I watched thousands of gills hit the nymph and spit it faster then I could lift or strip to set the hook and the popper never moved.  After this summer I'm convinced that I miss more than I see.

In Erie at these times there are many leaves and thats a good way to tell if your rig is ready
