One other interesting twist on the glo bugs and sucker spawn for that matter, is to use multiple colors in the same fly. I often like to start off with a bit of light orange MacFly Foam and then tie in some darker orange. The two tone egg has been a good producer. Another good combo is light pink with a small amount of red to form a dot. The same idea with chartreuse with a red dot is effective.
I used to have one glo bug I called the tequila sunrise. It starts with a pinch of white foam, then lime green, orange and a small bit of red. It was a deadly fly. After biting one of those, the fish ended up with a massive hang over... pretty much what happens when you start messing with tequila.
Seriously, if you play around a little with the foam, you can come up with some combinations that actually kinda look like a real egg. You can even add a small amount of white dubbing or antron to the fly to help the appearance.
When it comes to sucker spawns, try tying in one of each of the following, cream, light pink, peach and yellow. Orange and yellow is a good combo as well as chartreuse and orange or chartreuse and red.
Don't be afraid to experiment. Most of the flies I tie are not tied to a strict pattern. I pretty much get an idea, check out how to make the fly and then go for it. I enjoy coming up with new versions of an old design and finding out if they will catch fish. And if you want in on a little secret, most flies of the appropriate size, shape and color, when presented to the fish correctly will work.
