Ive talkes to a few old salts who did time on bulk carriers on all the lakes, and they have all told me they have witnessed waves hit the pilot house on these boats on Erie during fall storms, all 3 have claimed to have seen waves in excess of 25 feet on Erie

I've had my 16 footer out when 3-4 footers turned into 8-9foot swells with 1-2ft chop on top...   it was definately a white nuckle ride back to the dock and I'd rather not do it again.  I think that trip actually made my boat a few inches shorter, and at least an inch wider when the bow plowed into one of the huge waves a lot harder than it should have.  Luckily it is an aluminum boat so it just bent a tiny bit instead of cracking like fiberglass could have.  Although now I have to make it so the center piece of my windshield will close without just falling through between the right and left sides as it does now.   it was a "fun" ride, but I would much rather have been in a much larger boat that day even though my boat did handle suprisingly well for the conditions.

I went down during one of the hurricances of 2004 (Ivan I think) .. just to look.  The waves were about 15 feet.  The forecast called for 12- 18.

2003 or 04 November I remeber a forecast being posted for 16-18's. One
week after that storm, I was at Elk access beach and saw whole trees that were tossed at least 50 yds up the beach, some of which are still there. This time of year is not a good time to be screwing around on any of the lakes without keeping a very close eye on the weather. Be safe.

    Gentlemen,
Will somebody PLEASE go down to the nut, or to trout run or onto Presque Isle (or all three) and take some pictures.  at 12-15 feet with an onshore wind or quartering wind you should be getting tubes.  Now let's see, where did I put my long board and my cutoffs'; Oh heck, that was 1971, about 120 pounds ago. . .  Never mind!
