Trout Unlimited and stream access
TU members: Regarding the issue of Trout Unlimited and stream access concerns, and important vote is coming up at TU. The way it was explained to me, if you are a TU member you can vote for the slate of candidates who support access. Follow these simple steps: 1. Down this PDF file. 2. Print out page three of the proxy. 3. Cross out Gauvin . Write in Tom Anacker as attorney-in-fact in the indicated blank spot. CIRCLE HIS NAME. (Remember, Gauvin has lead the fight to keep TU out of access issues). 4. Vote for ALLARDT, ALLBRIGHT, DOSCHER, LANCE, MACIEJEWSKI, MURPHREE, SLATER, AND SMITH. Vote for the others as you see fit, or leave the others blank. 5. Fill out the bottom and sign. 6. Mail to TU at the address provided. Here's the letter from Tom Anaker, the Montana Council Chair, that explains things better: August 29, 2007 Dear Chapter Presidents and State Council Representatives: I want to update you on MTU’s efforts to held resolve the stream access dispute within TU. As you may be aware, an ‘ad hoc’ committee was appointed last spring to develop a recommendation for possible modifications to the existing May 2006 stream access policy to be voted on by the Trustees at the annual meeting in September. Matt Clifford was appointed to this committee and he has been fully engaged in that process. The committee’s recommendation was due August 15, 2007. As you might expect, reaching agreement has been difficult and the committee has been unable to reach consensus at this point. Efforts are continuing to resolve remaining issues. We are closely monitoring this process and will keep you posted. One recurring argument we hear concerning TU involvement in stream access is that it is not part of our mission. In order to clarify this point, we have introduced a resolution to the National Leadership Council (NLC) to add stream access to TU’s national Conservation and Organizational Capacity Agendas. The NLC is the grassroots portion of TU’s governing structure, and includes one representative from every state. Matt Clifford is Montana’s representative. The NLC should vote on the resolution at the annual meeting in Boise September 15. We believe if this resolution passes, it will go a long way to institutionalizing the importance of stream access involvement within the organization. The primary opportunity TU members have to influence the policies and direction of National TU is to vote for the nominees for the Board of Trustees. This vote is taken at the annual meeting. Members can vote in person at the meeting or by proxy. Attached is a copy of this year’s proxy statement. As you will note, the proxy allows you vote directly or to designate a representative to carry your vote. The MTU executive committee has determined that it is important for TU members in Montana to exercise their proxy vote in the upcoming election. We recommend you ask your Chapter members to fill out the proxy form (page 3) and appoint me as their attorney-in-fact for purposes of voting on the Trustee nominations. The executive committee feels it is important to demonstrate that we are paying attention to nominations and are prepared to exercise our voting power. We recommend that you vote For all of the Grassroots Trustees (candidates a, b, c, f, h, i, j and k). Our experience with them is that they believe TU is first and foremost a grassroots organization. We do not know enough about the conservation positions or vision for TU that the other at-large candidates hold to make a recommendation. If you know them, by all means vote for or against them. Several of us will be leaving the For or Against spaces blank for those other candidates. Please have your Chapter members forward their completed proxy sheets to the Missoula office to be received no later than September 7, 2007. Additional copies of the proxy can be printed from the National TU website at www.tu.org. Please contact me at 580-5649 or Bruce at the Missoula office with any questions. I hope you will be successful in rallying the troops. Regards, Tom Anacker Montana Council Chair
