I shot this big old sow in Appalachia last week. A brand new crossbow brand recently launched and I was honored to be selected to field test the first bow off of the production line. She weighed right at #200. I had the backstraps on the grill already and man was she some fine eating.

Good deal.

Did the crossbow perform as expected?

For sure. It is a moderately priced crossbow at $499 retail. There are lots of expensive crossbows out there but the majority of people want a crossbow that shoots well, is reliable and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. That is who this new company is targeting. I used the factory arrows and they even have their own broadhead, which I used as well.

That’s a good strategy. I know a few folks that would get into the crossbow game, but don’t because the popular ones cost the same or more than a rifle.

Too many get caught up in the speed game and the flagship bow game. All one needs is a reliable crossbow with decent components. I am fortunate to be able to shoot most of crossbows out there, some costing two grand, and my favorite at the moment is $700.

If one sticks to a moderate range, say 40 yards or less, does the extra speed translate into anything really?

I have only shot two deer with mine, one at 12 yards and one at 37. The speed is 350 FPS. I don’t think either noticed.

Not much. A few inches trajectory wise. 350fps will punch through just about anything if you hit where you are supposed to with a sharp broadhead.
