Fished Ontelaunee Lake today for the first time this year........

There was a guy there when I got there, but he left shortly thereafter........said he was catching gills and perch

Ice was about 6-8 inches.........most of the snow has been blown off the ice by the wind

Fished from 9am to 5pm

9-100 pretty steady action with gills, pumpkinseeds and crappies....caught one yellow perch, one white perch and 3 largemouth bass

100-230 was slow but caught gills gills and more gills

230-430 was pretty good.....lots of small gills........the fish got smaller as the day wore on....a few small crappie also

430-500 Dead Sea  maybe one or two fish

Most fish taken on small Fiskas tungsten jigs tipped with a nuggie and a spike
Tried spoons, but only caught a handful of fish on the spoons

The showdown was acting up........I am guessing the area was really cluttered up.........marked fish top to bottom......the showdown was all squirrly today..........really didn't use it.......

Musky and Pike.......I have been told by the PFBC biologist that there is a small population of Walleye, but I have never seen, nor never heard of anyone catching any......the state used to stock Stripers..........it is loaded with cats and carp too.......

Near leesport..........the lake runs alongside Rt. 73  ---  the lake falls inbetween Rt. 61 and Rt. 222

It can also be found on Rt. 662, inbetween Rt. 61 and Rt. 222-- moselum creek and maiden creek enter near Rt. 662  --

Almost all of the ice fishing is done in Peters Creek Cove (maiden creek rd) and alongside Rt. 73--in the area of the cove near Calcium Road......

Berks County, Maiden Creek and Ontelaunee Townships

I once saw two pike on the ice during the same day.........caught within' 50 yards of each other, one was about 12 pounds.......the other was close to 20

the main lake can be sketchy..........don't go walking off on your own.......

I was there yesterday. Not much action yet, but just enough to get me excited for the upcoming season. I worked below the spillway for a bit with a jerk shad and got a smallish bass.

Went down to "Big Rock" and had no action. Drove back to the cove area of the Lake and had some hits here and there using a Mepps #5 spinner (in orange) but nothing hit hard enough to set the hook.

Plan on checking out the area by Peter's Creek in the next day or so.
