3.5 is a nice discharge to wade, maybe a little quick, but there are lots of shallow "bars" throughout the river. If ur up to your waist move up or downstream and you will quickly find shallower water. ( no need to be intimidated by this water, but do respect it)

i've only fished 2 spots up there... 50-75 yards in front of the dam and down by the first bridge. i've been deeper than waste high at the dam but have never paid attention to the # of gates open and to what # of feet they are open to.

it's an hour drive for me so i don't want to waste a trip and this has been very helpful. thanks again!

the bite is pretty slow right now. i went out the last few weekends and only caught one trout. if you're lookin just to get out, have a blast. If you're looking to land lots of fish you may want to to wait another week or two. Remember it's open to fishing until March 31st, and then its closed from the dam to the bridge until trout opener.

This is some really great info!

I've found that every dam is different with regard not only to simple flow amount, but also what the indicators are and how to fish it. For example, one place I've fished is just fine to fish with one gate (of about a dozen) wide open...so long as it's the one on the far side. On the other hand, having even one gate open on the near-half makes it unsafe.

It's good to have some accurate info about this place.

a fishin buddy tells of a dam between shenango and pymy maybe around rt872 that blocks the fish from shenango from getting to pymy outflow was told they stack up there any info

If you are talking about the dam in Orangeville, that's Pymatuning Creek. It's ok. I fish it a few times in the summer for carp, they're mainly small though, but some nicer ones too. Decent amount of bluegills and other panfish too, but they're not big either. In the spring it gets a run of white bass and hybrids. Last May was my first time fishin the run, and the creek was probably 3 feet or so ABOVE the dam! But there was very little flow because they were backing up a lot of water in the lake to help out with the flooding down south. I got a few small white bass, but it was pretty slow. I bet the fish were spread out pretty good since all of the Ohio parts of the creek were accessable to them...

That explains why Pymatuning was so d@mn high last year!  I never heard or thought of that being a reason.  I never seen that lake that high all the years we were fishing there.

Actually I meant they were backing up water from Shenango Lake, I don't know if they were also backing up water at Pyma or not. Pymatuning Creek is a trib to Shenango Lake that starts in OH and enters Shenango Lake in Orangeville on the west side of the lake, and is not connected to Pymatuning lake whatsoever. I don't know if you knew what I meant, but lots of other people get confused and think Pymatuning Creek goes in or out of Pymatuning Lake, it doesn't. The Shenango comes out of Pyma. Lake, goes into Shenango Lake, and comes back out again.

Anyway, yeah Shenango Lake was real high cuz of all the water backed up. Usually at the small dam in Orangeville when the water is real high there's huge rapids, but with all the water backed up it was like a lake. That same week I fished the Shenango River below the dam in Sharpsville, and only one gate was open obviously, but then a week later a guess they couldn't hold any more water back they had all 7 wide open. There was one guy out there wading, but all 7 is definitely too high for my liking(wading wise). I caught a bunch from shore, didn't need to wade.

it was determined earlier in this thread that all 7 gates open to 1 foot was still wade-able below the dam. they recently opened all 7 to 1.5 feet which caused a decent spike in the water level.

is it still wade-able with all 7 open to 1.5 feet?

no we at the army corps strongly advise to stay on the bank.especially during the cold months
