what can anyone tell me about the fly fishing in the shenago tail water....is it a good trout water.... does it stay cold during summer months like most tailwaters...recently moved back home after 4 years in tn fishing tailwaters and mountain streams...never fished this river any help on flies would be greatly appreciated...is there good hatches or are soft hackles and streamers the way to go ..have both floating and intermedeiate sinking lines... is it a deep slow river or shallow with a lot of riffles and runs is it wadeable in most of it ? any advice would be greatly appreciated would love to try it out this month for some trout...

The faster water is from the dam to the old iron bridge...then again about a 1/4 down from there.
I have found the trout fishing is good threw to July. Best fly for me has been elk hair caddis. The green weenie also does well. For streamers can,t beat green wollies. Other good ones are bh caddis, bh pheasant tails and good ol san juan worms.
Early season you will hook huge suckers so go with a heavy tippet. There are some holes you don,t want to fall into. At the first bend down from the dam is a deep hole and another 100 yds. down from there, a very deep hole.
I use a 6wt. 9' with wt.fw floating line. By the iron bridge is an island you can wade to and work the seam that usually hold fish and also next to the dam on the far side is a good bet.

Yes it is. It won't see anyone doing this on the Erie Board. We have no problems helping anyone out on this one. Good job John.

i think they're going to have to turn the valves off a bit before this area becomes fishable? this mornings update says all 7 open to 3.5 feet.

just a reminder that the shenango river below the dam is a natural reproducing fishery. So if you catch a big fatty female loaded with eggs..it'd be pretty sweet if you threw it back, just a thought. Also the river is closed for harvesting walleye from March 14th through May 5th.. tight lines
