Nice identification on the trillium, Doc. I know a spot where the white and purple ones come out at the same time. Makes for a nice walk to the creek. 50 bonus points if you can tell me what the native americans used it for.

every pennsylvania resident should spend at least a little time in the ANF in their lifetime.

Thanks everyone. Was definitly one of the best times I've had in a long time. I spend quite a bit of time outdoors, but this trip has renewed my interest for hiking, and I can see that I will be trying to make a few more trips up this year to explore some new country. I agree with Accountant that everyone in PA that is close enough should spend some time enjoying this great resource.

PS. The hillsides that surrounded us were loaded with the trillium. I see some small patches of both the red and white varities around home, but nothing like the amount that was growing up there.

Dr. Trout
Maybe the native indian males did not have to worry about "that time of the month"...

a cure for PMS ?????

Folklore: Used to facilitate childbirth, and to treat other female problems by the women of many Native American tribes. Trillium root was considered to be a sacred female herb and they only spoke of it to their medicine women.

Trout Lilies everywhere here ... no May Apples or Trillium yet ?????

I always heard the dried root was an aphrodisiac for the ladies.

I've even heard it referred to it as squaw root.

If it really cures pms, I know what I'm gonna start slipping in my wife's coffee.
