but i caught steelhead above pineville 2 weeks ago and lucky and i saw about a dozen there last week.
i doubt we saw 1 10th what was actually there.
it wasn't that the steelhead were stuck below the clamshack,i did see a water thrasher lose 1 there, it was that they were not hitting our offerings like the fish downriver have been.
lordy i hope the next trip is better.

I dont recall ever saying that there were NO trout mid/upper river... did i ??? I do recall saying that MORE trout seem to be MORE abundant in the lower river (not just dsr) in the month of october.

Dime,

We used to frequent the very low end, but my payraises have not kept up with the health care-like inflation in access fees.  If I can get up there next weekend I may have to bite the bullet just for old time sakes. By the weekend after, it may not be so necessary.  But unlike folks who are praying for the cold, I wan titi to stay warm enought at the water stays inteh miod 50's, where the fish are extremely active on the line.

you did say this didn't you.

in my experience through the years, steelhead was always a lower river game for the most part in october...as it is so far this year

so no, you never used those exact words.

Hey, luck... im not always referring to dsr when i mention lower river... i should start being more specific as internet misunderstandings can get out of hand at times ;) (winking at bobbee)

If im around next weekend maybe we can swing a rope or two... most active bite i find to be between low forties and low fifties... although sometimes mid thrities with a one to two degree rise within one day can be lethal as well. I think we have a little while until thirties though. If all goes well for me i may be hitting dsr sometime this week...i'll let you know what i see if im lucky enough to get the time...

Dime-

While they may bite more actively, I've always found that the runs and jumps are more aggressive whent he water is in the 50's.  I still fish through the winter some years, but I find that the fish are more  logy than these early chromers (when you can  get attached!).  I always looked at the lower river as from Jefferson Street down, and there is just the stairs and the long run and the black hole and tail in there.  We looked at some of that on Tuesday but it was still more crowded than where we ended up.  If I can get away next weekend I'll drop you a PM, I'm chained at work all week for the next three, and I have to put new shoes on the truck, as the slow leak I developed up in the Moose River Plains back in September is starting to speed up.
