Planning on getting a new musky reel. Plan on burning buck-tails and throwing other big baits that i want to bring in at fast speeds. Have yet to use a reel i really like. Ambassador 6000 has 6:3:1 ratio but cant handle the big bucktails. Any suggestions??? I want a high gear ratio, and maybe a single handled reel, maybe even a saltwater reel. Price isnt really an option

Gear ratio alone does not determin how fast a reel is. You need to look at inches per crank for the reel.

If you have a lower inches per crank reel you will have an easier effort in reeling, so you can spin the handle like a mad man thinking your burning the bait but in realityit may be going the same speed or slower than a faster inches per crank reel turned at a slower speed.

Remember each bait has a resistance in the water, more or less friction. The higher the friction the harder it is to retrieve. This plays in to reeling effort. There is so many factor that come in to play. Reel handle length, spool dia., spool width, gear ratio, how much line you have spooled, internal forces in the reel (example: well tuned and oiled reel vs one with brakes cranked down and sand in the gears).

But I recently got a Tranx HS, it is big, heavy but smoking fast in line pick up (43 inch per crank, my old curado had 28") which is perfect for my style of fishing. There is alot of trade offs but for me the new advantage is well worth the disadvanges of this new reel.

Tranx are b-a. Surprised that's the first reel of its kind. I doubt it will be the last.

I think i am just going to wait til next spring to get it. My current reels are good enough for now, especially since I dont need as much speed as in the summer months. My buddy just got the Revo toro winch 60. That reel makes bringing in cowgirls and big crankbaits effortless. I may go with that, but it seems slow for what i want with a 4.6:1 ratio and a 21inch per crank retrieve i believe it is.
