GRUNT-amazin how far they can hear a low grunt. In rut its like flowers to a bee.

4 doe and 3 turkeys, nice gobblers at that. I got in my tree at 6  about a half hour before light, after an hour in the dark the first thing I see is a hunter walking right to me, wait till hes under my stand and say good morning he says sorry and continues to stumble thru the woods tripping over every thing on the ground. He circles me and climbs into a stand 100 yards in front of me, now Im ****ed. After 10 minutes of banging and crashing sound I finally yell are you settled in yet? It gets quiet and untill he leaves at 1030 I see nothing, right after he crashes back by me marking every tree with little pins A single doe trots by then the turkeys and an hour later 3 more doe, man I hate state land, fishing tomorrow will make it all better!

Wow what a day . Our group of 4 seen so many deer but the woods stayed quiet.
Gotta love a playground where other hunters are non existent .
Finally at 4:20 my good friend and 3 year hunter with me shoots his first ever deer.
It was a 1 sided fork horn. Way happy for him as he has hunted the adks for years without luck.

My spot totally died in the pm. I did not see another deer but it'was a great day as the stories are being told now

Sat & Sun had me in the woods.. I seen so many deer but was unable to fire a shot.. At least my buddy was able to get his first ever deer after years of hunting and my son put one in my freezer..
Yes there will be fresh meat on the Ice..

Nice to hear you folks are doin OK Tuna- Hey-- one of those piles looks like it is gonna take longer to cut up than the other- lol--both are worthwhile projects most all of us enjoy the products of ( Meat and heat).
  In regard to other Hunters- I can get miffed but not mad when somebody else is around with a tag. Its the POACHERS that pizz me off.
  No legal guys out back this AM- they park by my house and I know when they are there -two quick shots though --poachers.

I put a major dent in the wood pile today as it all needs to be split and stacked before snow flies so I can plow there.. Have a feeling it won't be long now..
Even played with my Ice fishing gear a little.. In just under 3 weeks (dec-9) I fully expect to be standing on water :) 
 
The vittles, well I think that will take longer to process as good friends, gas grill and alcohol will be involved on sunday :)
 

Just got back from Otsego County (Worcester), decided to make the trek to my buddy's farm Friday for the opener of rifle season.  Saturday I saw a couple of coyotes at first light.  Took a poke at one  over 250 yards away but missed (Remington 700 .308) .  Saw nothing but does and fawns but my buddy took a nice five pointer.  Sunday started out the same as Saturday with a dog coming by at about 6:20 AM, no shot.  My buddy's future son in law took a nice basket eight around 7:00 AM.  I saw nothing but does and fawns and a flock of toms atleast twenty strong.  They made such a racket that I thought a herd of elephants were coming by.  My luck changed Sunday afternoon.  After getting busted by a doe and her two fawns shortly after 3:00 PM I thought I was going to go begging but I caught a break.  I kept on concentrating on where I had sighted the doe and fawns in the hope that would come back out into the hayfield while taking a occasional glance at the lower part of the field.  I was in a shed that I built a few years ago that is 4' x 6' with windows on all four sides.  It sits on top of an old hay wagon and has an old office chair so I can swivel around to scan the field.  At about 4 PM I took a quick glance to the brushline below the "shooting shack" and to my surprise a deer had entered the field.   The deer was approximately 115 yards away (150 to the brushline) and staring in my direction.  I quickly got my TC Encore 30-06 with a Leupold 4.5x14 40mm scope (Boone & Crocket reticle) on target to find it had horns.  No time to count because he was getting ready to bolt.  Put the cross hairs on the shoulder and let her sing, the buck didn't make it back to the brush.  I sat tight hoping that I could fill my doe tag the same session but no luck.  Turns out it was a three pointer.  Venison in the freezer.  Monday was repeat of the previous two mornings.  Coyotes at first light, followed by does and fawns (busted me from behind), a flock of nineteen long beards in one group and thirteen long beards an hour after that.  Didn't see anything during the afternoon outing until I spotted two does at dark in a small field near my ATV.  Today was get away day, do or die, because I had to pack up to head home by noon.  I was in the same treestand as the three previous mornings hoping to get redemption with one of the coyotes I missed the first day, they never showed.  At approximately 7:30 AM I saw a deer heading down hill through the hay field about 300+ yards away.  I took aim with the drop compensator with my scope and rolled the dice.  The deer jumped running about seventy yards coming to a stop in the middle of the far end of the field.  She stood in the same spot for ten minutes as I debated the wisdom of another shot about 400 yards away.  To complicate matters a group of six does and fawns came from the same direction as the first deer.  As they continued downhill into the hardwoods I turned my thought back to the deer that was still standing in the field.  Clearly she was hit too hard to run with the herd.  Ten minutes later she slowly walks into the hardwoods and my fear that this may be a gutshot animal makes me climb down to pick up the blood trail.  I don't know if any of you have had to track a wounded animal in a thick hay field but believe me it is not easy.  It took about fifteen minutes but I found the spot where I took the shot and found blood and fat.  No pounch material so that is a good thing.  The blood was sporadic even where she stood for all that time.  I continued from the field into the stand of oaks constantly heading downhill toward the field where I had taken the buck on Sunday.  I found two beds but little blood in each. Apparently the tallow was closing up wound channel.  All evidence that the shot was low on the torso.  After nearly 100 yards from the field I jump her but I can't get a shot to finish her.  Fortunately she had one last burst of energy and dropped thirty yards from where I jumped her.  Recovered the animal about an hour and fifteen minutes after taking the shot.  Very lucky to have caught a piece of her liver to put her down.  A great four days in the woods.
