Fellow anglers would invite me to fish the big water at Lake Erie and my response would be no thank you.

My fear, like many do, I would lose interest in my own back yard. Even though, my beloved boat of 17 years was capable of fishing the big lake, I never made it.

Turns out after all these years, I was right. One day of surf fishing and the rest is history. Heck, even though I still catch no stupid fish, I definitely don't care about fishing Erie now.

Thanks to rsquared, pork, eyes, jm, & others, I've learned ya can "teach an old dog new tricks.

The only question that remains is, whyyyy did I wait so long.

Pork is correct about the summer temps and humidity in the south. Though I'm still wet behind the ears in learning the south I will say any y'all should take the time of the year into consideration if planning a trip.

Today the temp could be 73 degrees with humidity at 90% and it's y'all be wearing a thong on the beach. Tomorrow the temp could be 77 degrees with himidity at 45% and y'all will be wearing sweat shirts.

I suppose, y'all would get use to the weather in due time, just as you would seeing meπŸ‘€ in MY thong.πŸ™ˆ

Good times & tight lines.

I am no fan of humidity, be it in Pa. or in the South. For me, 72 degrees with 90% humidity still makes me feel like I died and went to hell. As a Navy SeaBee, two weeks each year we had to go to Camp Lejune, N.C. for training. The humidity was horrid. We'd come out for Quarters at 7:30 in the morning wearin' starched pressed fatigues with a crisp starched 8 point hat, and 45 minutes later I'd look like Sad Sack!
OTOH, if I won a free trip south to fish for Redfish, I could probably suffer the week out.

Mitch, the humidity we saw the past two days was common along the Gulf in March. The temps were only in the low 80s but the humidity was quite uncomfortable.

Cold front about to move through my neighborhood and will be knocking the humidity down and the temps back to the mid 60s by Sat.

Yesterday I worked up a soaking sweat mowing the grass with my garden tractor. Today, I fired up the AC in the car and drove to Franklin for a visit... screw the grass til the humidity drops.

Speaking of the humidity dropping..., it has begun. (6/10;18:45)

Raining like the proverbial cow and flat rock in my little piece of Penn's Woods.

Sounds like a little hail may be falling with it.πŸŒ©πŸŒ§β˜”

There is a facility in Florida (near the Villages) that I am in contact with guys on a daily basis.  When talking to some of the guys down there and family that I have (DeLand area), the summers are similar to our winters, per how they go about things.  You go from your car with AC to whatever building with AC, where we go from heated environment to the next.  You limit your outdoor times during the middle of the day.  The mornings and evenings are usable times.  Even my cousin that owns his own steel building company, they try to schedule as much work Oct-May as possible.  Obviously, not passing up other work, but like our winters, those that work outside seem to build up a tolerance for it.

Personally, I'd rather have the heat.  Most of my winter activities revolve around the indoors.  I am not much for doing winter related activities.  Ice skating is something to do with the kids, I could deal without it.  Ice fishing season is often non-existent below I80, or maybe 2-3 weeks.  When it was in the 90s and humid a few days back, I was just fine.  Especially with a little breeze in some shade felt nice.  Granted, I wasn't going for a long run or trying to build any sort of buildings or even staying in the direct sun for long.  That said, I have never come close to spending 3-4 months of non-stop high humidity and temps near 90 or above.  When on vacation, I enjoy that sort of weather.  I highly doubt that I could do it without AC.  I am pretty sure that I'd be just fine if I had a shaded area that I could plug in a fan if there is no wind.  Access to a pool, if living down there would be a must too.  It is usually only those days flirting with 90 or more and high humidity that I am interested in a pool.  Those days that it is 80 and low humidity, that water better be heated...

When temps are flirting with zero F or even below 32, I am not really a fan.  Heck, anything below 50 and I am not all that much of a fan.  The majority of my winter activities are indoors.  I'd much rather be fishing in 60 degree weather during the winter than anything winter related that I can think of.

When I lived in SC, I did my fishing mostly at night in the summer.  If I went in the morning I got on the water before sun up and left around 9.  One word of advice, when asking locals for fishing advice, talk with a southern twang.  If you talk like a yankee most won't tell you anything.

That may have been true a few decades ago but not so much anymore. Just speak the universal language of love...er...fishing. They will spot a fake accent from miles away anyway.

Any real fisherman will help another out as long as your not crossing the obvious boundaries. We all speak the same language if we share the love of the sport.

Strangely enough OBX locals seem to harbor a special distaste for people for New Jersey.
I've heard it from multiple bait shop employees and charter captains. Pennsylvanians seem to enjoy a good enough rep though.

I think it is the same everywhere.  You get some helpful people that love the sport as PEB noted and willing to share helpful info.  Others are just grumpy/selfish/whatever.  I have learned a ton from many good people on this site and other sites, as well as meeting people on the water or bait shops giving some pointers.  I have shared it back with many others as well.

Back in the day when I worked in the fishing industry, I got asked every day about what was happening, where to go, what to use, when to be there, etc. and even though I was fishing tournaments at the time and keeping silent about what I practiced hard to learn may have been personally prudent, I answered each person and question honestly and openly.

Why?

Because I wanted to share the sport (as I hoped others would when I asked questions) and, besides, none of them went to or used what I told them anyway.
