Tried to join over there - when they talked about fishing.
After applying and sending a note a few weeks later asking if there had been an error-  continued to wait -with no response of any kind.
Eventually  sent them a letter saying  even if they asked me politely  would have no part of it- had waited far too long with zero response.
Guess they hit my zero tolerance level.  Had the impression nobody was watching the barn door.
Later  it seemed to bottom out- too bad - they used to give some decent reports from some decent sounding fishermen.

I had been a member for a while, but rarely posted, due to the fear of accidentally saying what color bead or fly I used.   Everything was a spot burn or you were accused of wanting to be spoon fed by asking a simple question.   I am the first to admit that a few folks here spoon fed me some info a few years back  on flies and even a few spots.  Turned me on to getting after the steel.   Too bad there were a few good folks there.

Frankly kinda enjoyed some of the back and forth banter between guys who knew how to take it for what it was meant to be . They did know the meaning of a joke over there and didnt get all upset when one was made..
That seemed fine when fishing was the topic of the verbal jousting and seemed generally in good humor- got to be a bit more personal lately though and it appeared some were taking offense.
Agree with Clint about the over played spot and offering 'burn' slamming-went too far IMHO too.
A lot of those guys seemed very dedicated to the SR fishery and put their actions where their words were in that regard too with volunteer work and such.

Guys watched the fishery explode and blamed the nets.
Therefore anyone giving info was spoonfeeding and if a location got mentioned its spotburning.
I went from fishing all day without seeing anyone but Lucky to sitting on the bank waiting for a spot to open and all this before the webs.

Does it make it easy to learn and add to the horde?
Of course it does.
No more walking from town to the meadow only to have to bushwack the knotwood bank or wade against 1800 cfs to get back to the starting point.
Just read and show up.
Of course all that info is old by the time they get there.
Some spots produce on a regular daily basis but many are full of fish today and empty in the morning.
I can see nothing wrong in trying to help someone that shows a genuine interest in in the fishery.
Better to spoonfeed them at least enough so they're not stumbling around wading thru the holes and generally getting i the way till they learn on their own.
Iwas lucky enough to have learned at a time when there were few people to get in the way of and the one that was there was kind enough not to mind when I did something dumb.

Bob, although salmon crowds were heavy when i started in 90, steelhead was not. And the only report youd get before labor day was the douglaston hotline and yes it wax always honest. Early august runs went unfished for the most part. And if there were no fish atleast there were no people...unlike now. By mid october the lower river pressure was cut by 75%.... there were killer days in to late december with only few to sometimes no anglers...and yes you worked for your fish. Techniques were either acquired by trial and error or from seeing other people on the river.... i am grateful for those times and hold them wih me aswe will never see them again... maybe its better off salmon crazy is gone, and i am noticing a trend on other forums of people being a little tight lipped...its not a bad thing... yes, there are no secrets on the salmon river, but forcing people to get out and try in their own could do good for the area itself fishing wise and possibly weed out the people a bit... just my opinion...

There really is no good answer and I agree to all that was posted above.   As long as we are good people maybe help out , maybe don't.  That's all that counts.    I can say one thing though.   To all I have met on the river and this board , I do not think there is one guy that would not hesitate to help if approached on the river and asked a question.

Might take some flack on this one but it needs to be said IMHO.
When talking bout the river and the 'extended' season by fishermen its easy for us to point to our peers posting their experiences.
Agree that increases pressure but dont rule out the Guide and Tackle shop reports either. They are real big on reporting early and late fish as well as posting clear references to spots and tackle that are 'no nos' by fishermen on various Boards.
Face it -the fishery is commercialized and those folks are trying to make a living at our  pastime. Extending their season for income purposes as well as assuring a good chance for hookups is in their best interest.
Not a bad thing IMHO but certainly a large part of the picture.
If you doubt this just Read the various pro reports that are already posting August  adventure opportunities. We do the same thing.

Yep, the facts of the fishery
I've always said you have to enjoy it for what it is....and if you don't or can't, why would you go?
I'm sure i would not have a place up there, or spend 1-12 weekends a year up on the river, if it were not for the internet getting me tuned in to the fishing.   So, i am part of the problem i guess :)
