So not to post another question about rigs/gear....  But would a Daiwa TDS 3000cu with 12-14# flouro or mono be a reasonable reel to use paired with a 9' Medium 4-20# Whuppin Stick?  That's the current combo I was considering since the Whuppin Stick was laying around from my girlfriend last year on our Erie Steelhead Trip.  Most I would have to do would be get another rod seeing as I have 2 TDS 3000s, but I assume the reel would be alright?  They're pretty beefy and heavy duty...

it will work
what you will find is you need a reel with a good drag, but if its too heavy you will regret it after a hard days fishing
i use a longer rod (noodle rod) 10'6" ultralight with a shamano sedona reel, usually 10 lb mono
works great

First you need to learn Russian. Then buy yourself a deep sea rod with an equal sized reel spooled with 50# test, so you can crank the salmon in sideways. Then get some 2/0 hooks and a jar of Jensen eggs but only put one on the hook, it's more productive. And finally carry a large amount of cash on you so you can pay the fines on the spot without losing your spot or stop "fishing" all together. Oh yeah bring a bunch of coolers also cause you can keep only three on the river but if you bring them to the truck and go back that's ok for Russian speaking folks. Welcome to the circus

Forget all that.  A gallon jug of Clorox and a net to scoop them up as they float down stream.

haven't been to salmon river in years. Planning a trip in a couple weeks. Would appreciate any help on what floats, flies, weight, line....... to bring with or buy when I get there.

bring split shot with you as you can only buy tin up there
fish them like trout
a good strong hook size 4 (i use gamagatzu) weight about 16' up the line, just enough weight to have it bounce bottom a few times as it moves down, and i fish egg sacks..

If they arent in DSR in the AM Sat go upper mid river- This push will be up that way by then. Looks to be at least a decent two solid day push so fish could well  be up that way by Sat..
With fan seeing zip in the estuary today another push may not be around for a river for a day or two- but then a few hours can change all that this time of year.
Dsr in the AM at least if always a good bet. Especialy with the Labor Day weekend higher releases.
