Okay last year my buddy caught a brown and took the skein.  He kept it intact and put good old borax in a zip lock and froze them. Is it possible to take them out of the skein and then use a different type of cure or will it ruin the eggs.  I'm mean technically they've already been cured with the borax, right?  Ultimately, we would like to get them out of the skein and tie sacks with them for steel.  We would prefer to not have the membrane in the bags because of how it turns white in the water.

I suspect the most appropriate option is to simply do our best to get them out of the membrane and just tie them up or cut chunks and use an egg loop....

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks bear, I'm wondering if it would be fine just cutting them up and putting them in bags.  I've read people want to get them out of the membrane.  I personally never understood why.  When fishing salmon we would just cure the skein and use an egg loop.  For steel, for whatever reason we've always used loose eggs and tied them in bags....  Sort of funny that I sort of just fell in line in terms of fishing for chrome...  I really was hoping to use the BT eggs as some seem to swear they outfish salmon eggs.

Use the egg loop and leave them in the skein.  They should work fine until you get another brown that is loose.  They don't want to come out because the ovary had not fully developed, but skein works well.

Here's a link to a good "how to cure" page:

Thanks Eagle I looked at this the only issue is the eggs were cured using borax and then frozen.  So this process might not work. Now I want to essentially cure them again because I would prefer them not to milk out in less than 5 minutes....  But I also don't want to ruin the eggs. Finally I would prefer to fish bags versus skein so originally wanted to take them out of the membrane.  I think I'm simply gonna thaw them shake of the borax let them air dry and dust them again with borax.  Afterward I'm gonna cut them into small chunks and just bag them up. Who knows if it will work.  I have king eggs for backup.

I do appreciate the insight.  I might have to keep this in mind for the future when we haven't already boraxed the eggs.

After the thaw and redust, put the skeins in a bowl and pour Karo (or any corn) syrup over them. Leave them out overnight.  The thin liquid inside the eggs equilibrates with the viscosity of the karo syrup through the borax hardened membrane of the eggs.  They will milk out very slowly after this.   If you believe the old folklore about the 2 best trout baits being whiskey and sugar ( but how do you keep them on a hook) add a shot of amber and a couple of tbsps. of honey with the Karo!

Thanks lucky its seems this thread is now turning into a mixologist forum...  Capt Morgans, maybe a little Baileys and of course Disarrono amaretto.

I will withhold telling my buddies next thing you know it will be a right of passage every year.  You go up and start the trip with a cigar and the pulaski cocktail: 1 ounce of capt morgans, 1/2 ounce Baileys, 1/2 ounce amaretto.  Sprinkle 5 cured salmon eggs and serve with crushed ice.  Can't forget the maraschino cherry and piece of basil.....  All joking aside our first year up we each made each other eat a cured salmon egg.  More of a dare versus learning why a steelie eats them I think.....
Thanks again guys....
