I'm not trying to make excuses for anyone but I wonder how many so called fishermen can actually tell the difference between a fair and foul hooked fish.  I'm not talking about visibly seeing where the hook is, I'm talking about knowing when you have a fish "take" your presentation.  Just saying........

Gerry,   being new at the game I will admit I have had a few that confused me.  Mostly not feeling the take as it is too subtle.   Lift up the rod, think I am snagged on bottom and all hell breaks loose.   Have also had what I think is a good one and it ends up fouled.

It is nice to feel the head shake  once they know they are hooked.

Clint, what is your neighbors take on all this? What goes on in the LFZ is not accidental foul hook ups,it's intentional. When you use 3-4 cannon balls 4' or more from your hook and YANK on every drift you're snagging intentionaly. As far as knowing a take from a snag with the Salmon 99% of the time the fish will rocket through the water and jump, jump, and jump again.Very few Salmon that are hooked in the mouth will jump. Also if you feel some head shaking you got it in the mouth. If you got it in the tail it will wag its tail
There's other tell tale signs but in time you know what's real and what is not,

Jack I have never really sat down and talked with him in depth much on the salmon season in general.    When I usually see him he is walking with his wife and baby and I try not to talk  "shop" with him.  First words out of his mouth are usually "Seen any bucks around?"
Heck, he really did not know I even fished up there  that much until this year.  From the few times I have talked  with him I have gathered this...........   They really do not give the Zones any special attention,  because for every bad thing that happens there it happens 100 times  on the rest of the river and much worse to boot. They try to float through at least once a weekend and make spot checks.
Maybe next time I see him I will come right out and ask.

Salmon hooked in the mouth usually do not jump????   I will have to pay closer attention.   Thinking back  I can say almost every fouled fish I saw  that was on for any length of time  jumped like crazy.
