As some of you may remember I brought my 13yo son up for his first ever Salmon trip, that was 3weeks ago when not much was happening. Since it was holiday weekend we decided to give it a go.  Made my usual 4am departure Sat morn, arrived at 8:30, ate, give the kid his meds, and went down to DSR.   We met a really great  family from PA who took  a shining to the kid and the guy put him in his spot to fish.
He hooked his first salmon ever and gave that fish a run for his money!  fought the dam thing for a good 10mins and then snap!  line broken, fish gone.  I felt so bad for him, and he was crying.  after a good chat he went back at it and this time hooked a nice brown, which he proudly landed with the help of that fella and his net. so here's the kicker.  I was told that fish cannot be kept nor any trout for that matter?  DSR rules!  WTF?  50.00 dollars to fish and you can"t keep squat?  Never Again will they get my money.  we stayed all day and hooked quite a few Kings and finally landed one.   all in all a great day for him and lesson learned for me.
Sunday morning we went to the ballpark and hooked into fish after fish both him and I with all of them breaking off.  Finally I had a great take, right in the mouth could literally see it happen.  Off to the races I went, was using my 9wt fly rod going up and down river keeping steady pressure on this one.   the fish took off again and as I was walking down stream a father and son was standing right in the way and not moving a foot!  I started yelling to please back up and let me through when to my surprise the guy turns around and says "why should I? no one else does"  right in front of his kid?  while fighting the fish I tried to explain that its a common courtesy one that should be taught to all the young fishermen and that I would do the same for him.  This guy calls me an  A** Hole and then steps back.
this is what the world has come to.  sorry to say I lost the fish and broke my rod in the process.  all in all another great day!  headed home at noon and went to work at eight pm...   my son wants to make this an annual trip, one that I would be glad to go on.  Any recommendations on places to stay would like something with a kitchen so I can cook meals for him,  cabins would be nice!  He's on a special diet so I need to cook and  then we can also stay longer too.  no more battle runs!

cool report aside from the guys not moving but you played in the circus so it's to be expected, not right but expected..
As for DSR, it's a NO TROUT rule.. Keeping your limit of salmon is fine there..
There are many good places to stay in the area and many lodges (cannons place )  have kitchen set ups but they are shared facilities and usually booked WELL in advance for late sept -early oct..
I like the cabins at Selkirk Shores State park myself..  Again these usually a booked up by July so if you can plan way ahead then it's a good place to be private..

Selkirk closes mid October, too ( 10/19) this year for cabins or camping.
