I just got back from another awesome trip to the upper river and tributaries.  Already planning my next trip up to my favorite fishing area.
 
I am planning on coming up in mid to late November and I am bringing two newbies.  Can any one offer advice as to where to get newbies into fish in Nov.?
 
Are the salmon gone by then? I know steelheads and browns should be around.
 
Do the tribs such as trout brook and Orwell hold steel/brown or salmon in November?
 
Where would you recommend I look for fish at that time of year?
 
This would be the first time I have ever fished the area in November.  I've had success with trout on the big river in April but in areas that I would not bring a newbie too.  I am very curious as to the tributaries or other areas to find fish in Nov.

the tribs you speak of just don't do much for me unless they (the 1) are very swollen and the main river is blown out, basically spring time..  They are not my target areas so I wont offer any advice but can save grace when the SR is unfishable, doubt that will be the case this fall.
 
As for the SR in november..
I don't foresee any reason all the usual spots wouldn't have fish, salmon, trout & steelhead..
Down low for freshies and up higher for concentrations..
 

Salmon that are still around will pretty much be zombies.  Browns will be looking for gravel, but I have never had the luck of finding them in any consistent spot in the River or tribs.  Steel will be present and feeding, sometimes on eggs, sometimes on nymphs, sometimes on color.  November is basically "you pays your ticket and takes your chances,"  watch water levels and temperatures, if you can find salmon still spawning, it is always a good chance below them.  If you are flyfishing and don't mind releasing your fish (which, other than one per day for steel, or max three browns (2 if you keep 1 steel), but I've never seen anyone get three browns in a day on the SR,you have to do anyway) there are almost always a few players in the LFZ.  Be prepared for all kind of crazy weather, I've been wearing a mad bomber and my hood in a snow storm one day and fishing in shirtsleeves the next.  If it is cold, some of the deeper places up or down from gravel where you found fish in April should hold fish.

Like the others said fishing in the tribs unless the river is severely blown out is in most cases best left to the snaggers, because that's what you will find there.    Folks fishing in a pizz trickle ripping away at the fish in a foot of water, herding them and hunting them.   Can you fish there ethically, sure but good luck finding an unmolested fish.   There is nothing worse than seeing 2 or 3 guys chasing a fish up and down a stretch ripping away.  Enough of that rant though.
Like L13 said find some fish on Gravel and fish below them.  Fish transition water and at the heads and tails of pools.
 
 

In 'days of old' the feeders fished nicely- way too many guys in them now--Spring too.
 I still walk them often though just to see the fishes- sometimes with a rod and hope for some solitude and sometimes the rod stays in the truck.
 
 
 

oh don't forget the great anglers who start out on those little trickles, hooking a fish and their buddy runs it down with the net that then after a while don't bother even hooking them (note i didn't say getting them to bite) they just line up and chase them into their buddy's waiting net.....gees, the trophy of a lifetime right!!??
