Any lake with 2.5 - 3" already SHOULD be ok by then, just drill test holes in shallow water to be sure.  Don't go out to water over your head until you drill at least 2 holes.  DON'T GO ALONE.  Anyone who plans to go alone, message me, id be happy to let you join me. I plan on Conneaut lake if it's safe Saturday, if not, tuttle point would be the next choice.

Ill be headed up north this weekend on Sunday. I'm extremely new to ice fishing north western PA and would someone that could show me the ropes. I have extremely limited knowledge of the area. I have tip ups auger jigging sticks and what not. Just don't have the knowledge. Let me know if anyone wants to meet up.

frost
Those temps shouldn't hurt it too much, as long as the nights stay below freezing and with the amount of ice that should be on the lake by then. I really wish mother nature would just cut us a break and STAY COLD for a change during the winter months... I'll be out this weekend (Saturday through Monday) somewhere either Pymy or Conneaut depending on where I find fish.

Don't count on any ice being safe come this weekend. Lowes of 36 at night sat-mon. And highs of 47 during afternoon. Everything that will freeze today and tomorrow will surely be melted by Monday leaving a big wet and muddy mess :-(. Keep are fingers crossed for hardwater next month...

nonko.... don't trust your life with a web forum reply.  drill a test hole at the edge before you step on it.  drill another in water up to your chest.  drill another when you get over your head and MAKE SURE it's not thick in one spot and thin in another.  DON'T DO IT ALONE. EVER.

Tues 1/7/14 2:15pm. Drilled 2 holes on Edinboro lake on the east side, at the new restaurant. The 1st hole was when I was standing on the dock 20 feet from shore, it was 3.5 inches.  Walked out 20 yards and 5 inches.  Lakes has little to no snow on it. Ice is very bumpy and rigid on the surface. The ice itself is very hard and was difficult to drill through. Another night below 10 degrees with no snow will probably get another inch. I feel 100% safe on it, as long as all my holes looked similar to that 2nd hole.  NEVER GO ALONE!!!!!
