Any thoughts on a TFO Signature II 9' -9 wt. Fly Rod for use on kings and possibly double duty for steel. I already have an 8 wt. but don't think that will cut it for the sharks in Sept/Oct? Brand new to the forum but not the SR- 26 years but don't want to admit it. I've been fly fishing for about 35 years +/- but never for the quality of fish in the SR.

I am using a 11'6" switch in 8wt for Salmon and Steel and see no need to go heavier.I started fly fishing with a 9'6" 6wt 20+ yrs ago on the SR and landed many Salmon with it but it was a bit light so a went with a 9'6" single hand 8wt and used that for 17+ yrs until I went with the switch.I like that extra length for my drift and the switch feature allows me to roll it out there as far as I want.When I target the Steel I still use the 6 wt and have landed many,many fish with no problems.Remember there are times you need to go with a light tippet to have success and the lighter,longer rod protects that light line.Also,for the SR you don't need a high end expensive rod,a excellent reel is more important.

Thanks for the reply pafisher I appreciate the quick response. If I'm reading you correctly maybe ditch the TFO and put that money into a better reel? The rod is $130.00 w/a lifetime warranty , that was the main draw but I'm more than happy to spend less. Any suggestions?

What PA says, but if I already had the 9 and I was just fishing for salmon, I would use it.  But the 8 is better for steel and will handle the kings as long as you don't go overboard on your tippet.  The part of your system that breaks should be the least expensive!

using a 11/6 8 wt switch for most everything now with the lamson 3.5 reel--love both.
 Did revert to the  9 ft heavier rod for the early feisty Kings and was glad I did.

Cortland's 8/9 weight graphite rod is a pretty good deal.   I think this is the one both me and my buddy have and we have abused them.

It is cheaper here than at the cortland outlet store.   It has a MUCH faster action than my 8wgt  Cortland Procast rod and I feel pretty confident with Kings on it.   With my 8 wgt Cortland Procast  I was a bit easy with it as the action was slower and I felt the rod was at  it's limit a few times.
I am happy with my Cortland Sterling reel and feel the drag is pretty good for Steel and Salmon

WAr Eagle,$130 is not a lot of money and would n't be considered high end,two three times that amount and your getting into high end.Don't buy a piece of junk,I'm not familiar with the TFO but I'm sure it is a decent rod.For the reel I recommend a Lamson Konic,has a great drag,it is water proof,and you may be able to pick one up on sale for a good price.Back to the rod,for the SR I would recommend a 10' or longer 8 wt for Salmon and Steel.
 
I just checked on Fish USA on the Lamson Konic reel and the regular price is $160 for the 3.5 size and the 4 is $170.I got one on sale a year ago for $105,but even at regular price it is the best reel out there for the money.
So you spend $130 for a decent rod,$160 for a great reel,another $100 for line and backing and you're ready to have a ball.

$130 is dirt cheap for a fishing fly rod...The nine weight is a bit heavy for my taste.  But, if you ever get invited to fish Salmon in Alaska, you'll be ready!
