I fish these for smallmouth, and have caught some large browns with them on some tail waters down south using a sink tip. Tied right, these things act like a flatfish. After seeing how plugs work thanks to a drift with 3 fan, I'm wondering if these would work on steel.  Run out along a bank, swung into  a tail or seam, they just might do something.  I only have some tied on light wire hooks, as I fish them like an Original Rapala for smallies.  Maybe for steel- heavier hooks, as I don't care if they float as well.  Any thoughts?

Why not?  It looks legal.  People catch 'em on beads, for crying out loud!
2B and I saw a guy get one on a golf ball size hunk of orange yarn that floated. This big male came up and just hammered it.

Maybe just carry a Sharpie and color up some cigarette butts  collected in the parking lot.  I guess if they're that easy to catch, not  worth the effort.

Charlie you tie them up and you can stand right on the bow and feed them into my favorite plug spots. If they hit them like they smack the hot shots....WOW.....Have always wanted to tie a hotshot onto a flyrod just to feel the take, I mean for me its the best part flyrod, plugrod, laketrolling its all about the take. Waters 1500 and Im still headed up tomorrow, found a willing sole to sit up front and let the rods out, all about the take...Fish on!

I wasn't trying to rain on a parade.  It looks like a good idea.  But 2B and I did fish once with Keith Smith when he ran out of sacks, gathered all the plastic eggs and Wally Wogs to be found along shore on his side of the river, used all them, and finally actually did use a cigarette butt and hook a chromer.

John, I agree.  I fished them off a pontoon boat that was anchored and let them drift behind the boat, but you had to work the tip  to get them to really wiggle. Not as hands off as the Hot Shots, but they're pretty good for the fly stick. I think I will tie some up on a heavy curved nymph hook- maybe try to imitate  HT's rainbow trout pattern, and some in holographic foil-  Don't forget your camera tomorrow, I bet you'll need it.   All this talk of high water and I was thinking 3fan's gonna be in his glory.....

True story.
Full disclosure ...
he had burned through 3 dozen sacks at that point and
his fishing partner the same.
We ended up with close to a hundred fish between us from what the other fishermen told us.
The fishing was stupid easy that day (for us after it warmed a bit)

Fichy they can be **** near suicidal this time if year when they first enter
They were for Slayer and I on Tues
That doesn't make them not worth fishing for.
It makes them awesome fun

Bass and bluegills on spawning beds are **** easy to catch, trout in grasshopper season can be pretty stupid, blue fish and stripers chasing bait aren't exactly choosy.  But if you want to write them off and stay home, OK.  More for me!
