Fichy,Sounds like this "guide" was using the wrong tool and application.  He was too lazy to bring along an outfit that would be more practical for nymphing.  Its like using a .300 Win Mag to shoot woodchucks when you have a .223 back in the car. BB-I'm not a spey guy but I can see where that "D" loop at the start of the next cast can be viewed as suspicious.

I honestly prefer the switch outfit most anytime I fly fish the river... I have a #7 And #9 both at 11' and they fit almost any application or method. Great all around rods. I tend to lean on the 9 weight more so for line manageability

I think I'll start a Tenkara for Salmon Club.  Should be good for a laugh or two.

No, Gerry the guy had 4 Helios Spey rods pre-rigged and sitting there. He was flossing intentionally.  F.ck the D loop , you just flip the  bobber upstream like in normal indy fishing. He was rigged right for lining and snagging.Had nothing to do with the wrong tool. He was the tool.  And you're funny Dime, but miss the point.  I'm not talking about snobs, I'm talking about people that spend their lives perfecting techniques on  waters  you don't fish. The west coast guys I know could give a **** less what you're doing, but  if you're snagging they'd likely want to shove the Spey  up whomever's azz was trying to snag. Every method will snag fish where there's lots of fish (and fishermen) , a 2 yr. old can figure that out. It's all about intent.  I have no use for snobs, but I do have respect for people that perfect a method.  By the way, I got into it with 2 of the guys  fishing that way, including the guide.  I can still sit comfortably.

Understood fichy, I've always rolled my eyes to the 12' indie leaders. I fished next to a guy who claimed by pulling gently against the current while drifting the steelhead would slowly chase and nibble his fly... funny thing is all of his fish seemed to be biting with their belly :)

And you're right, not all are snobs... I've met quite a few though since I stepped In to the fly fishing community back when I was 9...
Most recently an acquaintance through family member insists that all fishing in the USA should be fly fishing only...those types make me wanna barf. Notions of that nature carved the path to me getting back in to spin fishing

Yeah, I was fly fishing last Thursday with a slinky and a turned around 2 wt.   Tuna did much better with the noodle covering water, but neither of us had any luck.  I'm looking at 11' 8 wts.  Might be the best all around for what I  want to do.  Nymph well, throw line, easy mends.  Enough backbone for shark and/or steel.  I love my 10' 7, but it's a  little light. Maybe just get a  11'  9 for shark and early season screamers. Any recommendations on affordable ones gladly considered. Cortland make a switch?

after reading their bio, it seems those shu fly rods are made from an actual fisherman with knowledge of what your after.. Might be worth a call to the shop.. They may be able to customize your rod to your liking.. I know you like spring guides..

Thanks guys. R- you're right, I could get them to put the REC guides on- if not, I can razor off the ones they put on and re-wrap. They sell blanks, but the price is so cheap for it built, it's hardly is worth gluing on the seat and cork.  As far as power, you pressured the heck out of them, Jack; as much as I was with my 9, so I don't see them as a light weight!  That price fits the budget nicely. Don't have to blow the whole winter's travel budget on one steenkin'  rod.  Nice. I like.  The Cabela's has potential. but I'd rather keep it at 11'.  The Shufly has a ridiculously  easy warranty.  25 gets you a new tip- 50 a whole new rod.
Guess I'll go wrap some change.

Sounds like your sold... but I have nothing bad to say about my 7-11 and 9-11 tfo deer creek series switch rods. They cast beautifully and both have gone beyond the test of landing lower river sharks. Have done steel on 5# tippet with my 9 as well
