Don't know what NYS paid for the Portly Angler but the old schoolhouse would have been a better pickup for a number of reasons.  It would have protected fishing rights and could have been the new home for EnCon recruits/in-service training.
I won't shed a proverbial "tear" if the Tailwater fades into oblivion.  Let's hope it is sooner than later.

I really don't see how they can be profitable,no matter how deep their pockets are they will tire of losing money and let the banks deal with it.

well they have very substantial tax exemptions for the next 10 years and its all a write off for the next few...so, while i doubt the turn a profit....they don't need to
it will be interesting to see how this all plays out

Was in and out of Pulaski a few times this winter and noticed fishing was wayyyy down and that the Jailhouse seemed deserted for the most part- looked  closed most of the time-only a car or two in the lot.
We will see about April through May and Shark season.

Another guy from the peanut gallery heard from.   Glad to hear from ta Trev   hope all is going well.   Your right EVERY time I go by there is not 1 car in the lot.   Sure it will have some  stayers during shark season,  but only when the other hotels are filled.  Why would you stay there when you get 4 to 6 guys and probably stay at the DSR with better fishing.   There will be the few that want the better accommodations, but they will NEVER fill the place with those type of folks, because honestly there are not enough of them around.

X'2 ... Glad to hear from you Trev and sounds like your enjoying the retired place.. Now give that rod a work out every now and again :)

I don't know about some things you said Clint..
I work for a lot of that "type"..
Also have stayed at both places they own in cuse, Sky and Genney.. They were both pretty busy but of course from corporate folks on the company dime (self included- minus the suit) ..
Charlie is on to something though.. Big Biz is getting tight on the reigns for the mid and lower level staff so they can still keep the jets flying for themselves..
Man how things have changed in the last 20 and again in even 8 or so years..

I am  talking about have people in rooms all year not just peak fishing.   Sure there are folks who will  pay and stay during  Sept 15 through Dec 15,  but what about the other months.    I  just have a feeling that those places in the cuse are busier due to the amount other amenities available in the city, especially if we are talking work related conferences.  Remember if your are meeting all day you cannot fish and what is there to do in Altmar on off time. In Syracuse you have a huge mall, theater, sporting events, bars, ect ect,   many in walking distance.    My vote is you will rarely see 4 to 5 rooms booked out of 42 during summer months and maybe a few more in the dead of winter.
Don't get me wrong though they are they and that is that.   I truly hope  the sell out every room every day of the year.  More tax dollars in the town and counties coffers and more jobs and after 10 years more property tax dollars.  All will benefit the community

Frankly their prices arent outa line for a good place in most decent vacation areas--that said fishermen on the Sr aren't gonna pony up those kinda bucks on  the wrong end and wrong side of the river in the BIG ( shark) season that attracts the most attention. They are simply asking too much when ya gotta drive for better spots anyhow.
IMHO they are likely to have a short run without a lot of  the group participation they advertised, likely having little to do with fishing other than a sideline after the meetings and such.
Why they are buying up more property is beyond me but its their cash, heck even with fisherman numbers being back to the old days levels  many of the old overnight  places are long gone-- likely more day trippers saving money in this economy.
Like I read someplace- we didn't loose anything but some land that really wasn't ours to begin with as the PFR is on the North side--the State really dropped the ball here and oughta pony up for as much right of way as they can get their hands on.  We been loosing property that has traditionally been fished all along the river lately to new owners and this coulda been a no brainer for PFR as it was already owned by Govt..
Walkways downtown are nice and there are more on the way but CMON- get more frontage with your money NY - its shoulder to shoulder  out there.
SR is a Govt sponsored victory story-don't blow it---
Rant over.

A lot of folks are also banking on the Atlantic program taking off a little more.  Then you'd have folks wanting rooms in June and July as well as early August.  And one person I recently spoke with was up there last June and said the LFZ was loaded with Ska's.  Maybe NYS is thinking about a change in seasons to allow people to get at some of those, or maybe the Hotel is seeing a good number out front of them as well.  Sometimes business success is being ahead of the game when one senses a change coming.  Then, of course, there is the fact that, whatever NYSDEC wants to do or thinks is the mission, they answer to people over them that have totally different agendas.  Think back to the "raise the license fee, and then Albany won't let you spend the money to hire anyone" situation of a couple years back.

Decent summer run fishes have been advertised since I started  decades ago- never happened- most likely IMHO because of the low Summer waters- perhaps with minimum flows there can be some new thinking.
One good pod of a very small gross amount of fish hanging in the zone  is a nice thing but not a real fishable thing- I hope they do attempt to increase them----
