They'd make great hat and tree  ornaments for the holidays!! I wrapped a 1/0 with the biggest estaz I had .  I find it effective for eggs (8 is the biggest for me) , nymph thoraxes, and ESL's. It took 15 " of material to cover the hook as shown. Seems kind of wasteful, unless you have solder wire wrapped underneath. Then it's particularly effective. Yeah....  I have lots of 1/0's,   as I use to trade a guide flies for striper boat trips.  I bet my favorite 1/0 Deceiver which is chartreuse over yellow over white with a red throat would work well swung for salmon, but it has very little chance of not getting seen and refused or avoided.
Well at least this thread gave me an idea for next fall. And an ornament craft project.

I bought some on Ebay then decided to tie my own....Mine don't look this nice.  The estaz is Rumf brand estaz in opalescent black....I can tie 30 flies per package which maybe costs $2.50 a package.....The hooks have a 3/8 gap and the package said 1/0....I saw guys fishing giant hooks with pieces of sponge on them in the ball field hole a year ago...They said they wouldn't even use the sponge except that the law requires them to use something...Wow, talk about admitting to snagging!  Got to talking to them, they said they were staying at Dawn's place in town...Never stayed there.

So then am I right?
That pic you posted wasn't your fly?

I still am very interested in seeing YOUR fly next to a quarter.

PS  I would rather be with an admitted snagger than someone who thinks they are fooling people into believing they are fishermen.
At least they are honest if not honorable.

Again I will say that I use a lot of bigger hooks (#2) because I believe I accidentally foul hook fewer fish with them since they aren't as needle sharp as tiny hooks and if I don't set the hook more often than not I can shake the fish off.
Also almost all of the flies I fish for kings are highly visiable for that same reason.
The one in the pic you posted doesn't not seem to be designed for the same purpose.

A quick tie of one of my bigger flies.
7x #2 cut shank with a #2 trailer hook.
Not about to sneak up and grab one unless its blind.

Pretty easy to do and I'm sure you have a leftover from the salmon season and won't even have to tie one for the pic.

I'll see if I can't get a pic of it wet in a little while I hope.

I might  lose maybe 10 flies a day in shark season, but that's a lot. On the other hand, if you're using tons of weight and hooking fish in the azz where they can't be controlled, lots and lots of flies will be wasted.   I pinch the barb down slightly , leaving the bump, but not the barb. They'll stay in a little, but shake off easier on the unintentional fouls. It does happen with the number of fish in the river. In the end, (pun intended) I think Chartist's fly could reference back to Bear's post, and be called the Preparation H fly.

I caught several kings in altmar using this fly.  When one of them was landed, I looked for the fly and couldn't find it.  That's because it was 6 inches down his throat and I couldn't reach it with my pliers so I had to cut the line and release him.

I caught 8 in 45 minutes and called it a day as it was 4pm and it was miller time.
