Westwood gerry ;)

Size 18 midges vs. Size 10 glo bugs??? That's apples vs. Oranges to me... But I guess its a Westwood thing :)

My gears are spinning so another question: since the term "ethical pattern" was brought up for size 10 and 12 glo bugs, are size 10,12,or 14 naturals considered unethical??? I have opened up steelhead bellies from the river to see many small nymphs and pupas that would easily fit on hooks as small as 14 and 16... And the last I remembered a size 10 glo bug has just as much capability if flossing as any other pattern/size/color fly... Just looking for understanding here guys as I am obviously missing something here, and sorry for the double post

When on the Erie tribs I sometimes use #16 nympths/#14 glo bugs when there are low and clear conditions.I have used #14 on the SR and my go to hook for Glo Bugs is a #12 Mustad Egg Hook.I find early in the season my flash back nympth,PT,and the Prince does well on size#10.
As I always say it's the jntent of the angler not the type of fly that determines ethical fishing,if you're a lifter/liner you could use almost any fly.Ask Chartist,he'll tell you!

I recall almost every steelhead trip I made back in the early 90's the guide used a #12, 14 or 16 caddis pupa pattern. I don't ever recall use of an egg or glow bug pattern.
Not to change the subject but I've seen first hand how deadly a bead is under a float.  I would imagine a nymph or pupa pattern would be quite effective under a thingamabob.
A million ways to skin the cat but I think a large part of success comes down to having confidence in what you have tied to your tippet.

Any pattern that is used to actually match something fish are feeding on is ethical . That's my opinion, anyway. Glo bugs fit ,so do nymph and pupae patterns. Fishing midges in the winter with a ton of weight and small tippet in order  to line podded up fish isn't, at least to me. I didn't intend to drag this thread about Oneida into a one up contest . Drake's back on SC if you want to do that again.

Wow total derail! Although derails are common round here some are more severe than others... It all comes down to misunderstanding I guest??? I am in question of why dredging size 18 midges in the SR was even brought up??? Once it was questioned light heartedly by myself it was all down hill from there. I'm still left misunderstanding the reason why we are where we are??? Maybe I should've kept my mouth shut??? Who knows??? Now drake is being brought in to the subject matter???I'm at a loss of words...but trust me, no hard feelings... I'm still smiling :) and I still respect and enjoy any one and everyone that commonly posts here.

Clint, SR is flowing at 185 and if I didn't have to do my front brakes today amongst other common chores I would've gotten out to hit my favored small mouth level... Would be glad to hit the water with you one day this week :)
