Didn't buy my first Mitchell 300 'til about 1970. My brother and I each bought one on the same day at Murphy' Mart. Remember it well. $16.88. His was pretty smooth; mine was a meat grinder. Stupidly, I later bought a Mitchell 900, which is the skirted spool version of the 300 in a different color. I still have it, but haven't used it for 35 years, once I discovered Daiwa and Shimano. I don't buy any cheap reels anymore. You don't ever get what you pay for, but usually, the more you pay, the better the quality.

I've had a Pfleuger President and Trion and I wasn't real impressed with either. Trion was absolute junk. Maybe a bad batch or something because they get pretty good reviews.

Bought some Shimanos this summer thanks to old dog's dogged support of Shimano - Nexave for the salt and rough fish here and Sienna for trout and panfish. Absolutely love both of em so far and both have performed far better than any reel I've had in the last 10
years. Never have had a reel that I loved. The Shimanos are getting close.

Anywho, I hope that whoever found it enjoys it, and can scratch a few more years out of it. Not a big loss and fortunately no sentimental value to it either.

rsquared, I finally got around to going through my assortment of no longer used reels, and I do have an old Mitchel 300. No idea how old it is, but it seems to work ok. Needs a little cleaning no doubt, but serviceable still. I am sure you can find another rod to put it on. Let's get those boys fishin again...P M me your address, and I will mail it to you...olds

Olds that is an incredibly generous offer! Thanks for it.

But I will pass on it. We have plenty of rods and reels left and the financial means to buy another outfit or three if we have a need. Neither of my boys will miss out on any fishing time because of that left behind rod.

So if you can find another kid who needs it, or if somebody here can use it to take a kid fishing, please give it to them.

Truly a great offer but we are set.

Olds-Pa if your interested, the link below will take you to detailed info for dating your reel.

You might check your reel could bring in enough cash to outfit several young people.

Viewing on a computer will be better, I didn't see a phone friendly button.

Just a thought.

Dag nabbit rsquared, if only you could have seen the incredible packing job I did on that reel! Neatly encased in a foam rubber cut out  I made to fit the reel. You are most welcome for the offer though and it will stand if needed.
BTDT...Thank you for the site to date the reel. From the serial numbers on the reel seat, it was made Nov. 1973 Geeze I'm getting old! Value of it I have no idea, but it served me well while I used it. I have a new Mitchel now, and use it for my walleye catching. Every where except Pymy this year though. Back in the late 50's when I lived on the west coast we bought Mitchel 300s for $12.50. After many sizzling runs from bonito and salt water fishing, they did become useless. At one time I had a Mitchell 350. A little faster retieve ratio. Don't know what happened to it though. After putting the 300 back, I see i'e also got a Michel 308A. An ultra light version of the 300. Hmmm, that might go good on my ice fishing jigging rod. Didn't mean to write a book, so thanks again guys...olds

Sent ya a PM olds.

Since you went to the trouble to pack it up, I'm sure I can find a kid - one of my sons' friends - somewhere who could use a nice reel like that.  Unless you've already got somebody else in mind.  We're always taking other kids fishing with us, so I'll find a home for it if that's your desire. Or I'll keep it as a spare for those situations.

You are welcome Olds-Pa. Like anything else the value is in the model, serial number or the eyes of the beholder.

Unfortunately for me I have no model, no serial number and my beholder, would just soon blacken my eyes.

I'm not positive but I think the 300 A was produced after 1970 but some of them, are worth a nice price above
original cost.

Tight lines.
