SALMON RIVER SMOLT
My most productive spring steelhead pattern over the last 4 seasons. Used to imitate steelhead fingerlings or smolts that aggravate adult spawning steelhead on redds.

NIX'S WOOLY SPECIAL
Named after local fly fishing and steelhead fisherman Ron Nix who used it so successfully. This fly combines the color combination of the Frammus with the action of palmered hackle.

My own discovery from Europe; the body material is Franze, it provides movement by the opalescent fibers replacing palmered hackle.

KING COMET
My #1 Chinook Salmon pattern has also produced many early September and October Steelhead and Brown Trout. SPECIES: CS, ST, BT

PRISM COMET
The body material is a very flashy mylar that comes in many colors, and is used in the lure business as tape. The sheets of Mylar have been cut into strips and no adhesive applied so that it can be used as a winging material in large trolling flies or squids. I have found it to work great as a body material for Comet flies, giving a unique appearance not found in either Edge Brite or Frostbite.

DAVES COMET
A Dave McCullough pattem tied in various color tails & hackles, but always with the white pearlescent body. This has been a consistent Chinook fly, but also good for early Steelhead.

KING ROGER
This fly was introduced to me by Roger Bargstedt in the mid-70's, although I adopted the basic theme with the materials below. Roger was a fisheries biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and grew up fishing the Minnesota Steelhead streams. This fly has been a killer for Chinooks and also lake run Brown Trout.

REFRIGERATOR HOLE
Simply a single egg fly pattern to represent a single egg.

HOOK: Daiichi 2171 Black TUE egg or San Juan worm hook size 8-12
TAG: Silver tinsel
TAIL: Fluorescent white Antron or Marabou (sparse)
BODY: Yellow chenille or Glo brite chenille tied in egg shape. Variations to this pattern can be changed with different colored chenilles.
HACKLE: Red for collar

This single egg pattern was the fly used to set the U.S. Game Fishing World Record for the largest steelhead (16 lb 8 oz) caught, played and landed on 2 lb. test tippet, February 1982 on the Salmon River by Fran Verdoliva.

KRYSTAL FLASH TEENY
Any color Krystal Flash can be used but my best success has been with white pearl, yellow pearl and pink pearl. I have had good results during low water periods and in Winter with the smaller sizes 8-14.

A pattem based on nothing more than a wild imagination that has worked, and named after the storms the region is most famous for. Probably resembles emerging fry, white has emerged a successful color in most recent years.

Some great ideas in those patterns.
Many call for Eagle Claw 42 hook; I would use a Daiichi 1120 2x scud or similar instead.

Yea most of those flies were created before daiichi hooks
I agree and would substitute with a better hook

If you went through my boxes, you'd find similar patterns to almost all that's listed, and only what has worked ever stays in. Not that I've caught that many,  jes sayin'..... Thanks for the list.

I have a couple of Betters' books, one an autographed copy.  Time to dust them off and revisit his patterns. 

I didn't see any 1/0 hook recommendations.

For your type of fishing a bare 1/0 works the same, feathers and flash create drag you just want to get your hook to the bottom fast as possible and azz hook the nearest fish drag it to shore backwards and take a pic with your fingers in the gills and your  thousand dollar flyrod in hand.
