As stated earlier, I had the day off so I made my way out for my first morning hunt. Work usually keeps me from too many mornings, so it was really nice to go out and sit in the blackness this morning. Its by far my favorite time of day to be out in the woods. There's just something about sitting in the half light right before dawn, having my ears and eyes playing tricks on me, and thinking of what could be not too far away in the dense undergrowth.
Once the sun popped out, the squirrels started scurrying about for the day. Was getting a real kick out of watching one go and bury a hard earned nut, only to have another come and dig it back up seconds after he had left. This nonstop show kept me entertained until about 8 when a nice size doe and her fawn showed up. She looked anxious as she fed on the acorns, and minutes later I saw why as a small spike came in to harass her. Shorty after, another spike and a 4pt showed up and joined in on the harassment as well. Chuckled in my head as it reminded me of the hallway chase scenes in the old Scooby doo cartoons, with a deer going out of view in one direction, the seemingly showing up from a totally different direction minutes later. This show went on for about half an hour, then they all meandered off. Ended up calling it quits just before 10.
Took the dog to chase pheasants after that, with a successful afternoon of putting them up, but not so much success hitting them. Did manage one that was dumb enough to flush right at me.
Having a late lunch \ early dinner, then back out to a stand for an evening sit. Good luck!
