Charter Operator I know was up for the egg take yesterday, he said it is mostly males reaching the hatchery, no surprise with the emphasis  on "egg wagons" on other sites like Salmoncrime.  He also said the DEC has taken some females from the Genesee, which is loaded with fish right now.  The lack of rain may be having the effect of concentrating all the fish into the larger tribs, like the Black, Salmon, Oz, Genny, Oak, 18 and the big N.  Salmon Creek in Hamlin has seen almost no fish, the weeds in the estuary are so thick they would have a hard time getting through.  Could all change by the weekend, though, the weather man is calling for 2 inches of rain by Saturday in my neighborhood.

So closing the LFZ did nothing to meet their goals for females to get to hatchery, but allowing the snaggers to continue to snag the rest of the river is wiping out the egg production. Why am I not surprised?

I think there may be some serious discussions among the powers that be about what is acceptable in relation to insuring adequate eggs in future seasons.  But they have always said that the LZ was supposed to be a sanctuary area for fish that could then run up Beaver Dam, and they must have felt that the closure was necessary to allow any fish that could make it to there to rest.  And my friend, who I think you also know, said they had hens, just nowhere near as many as males.

It is certainly interesting to read the take of the Lake guys on all this, there is a thread on Lake Ontario United about the Russians, and the general mayhem that has existed around Pulaski for the last three weeks or so.

I personally think that if there is a need for emergency closure to insure adequate egg take in the future, they should close the river from 3 to 2a as this is the steep slope area that sets up the gauntlet, or just close the entire river until they get the eggs needed.  The entire Lake fishery depends on that "one basket" above Altmar, and while it is a hardship for the industry to have to put up with the changes, if the current plan is not working, might be time for something more drastic!

Thanks for the info L-13 and yes , a drastic change is needed . I think $$ should not be the driving force of the fishery but rather .sustainability , even if it means closing the lower river to ensure the fish have a chance to reach the upper sections or at the very least continue the natural spawning so claimed .

From the reports I've seen, along with video, there is no shortage of fish.  The Genny and Oz are stacked with fish so DEC has other alternatives for getting the needed resources to meet their goals.
If you want to make the entire SR a no kill zone after October 15th I have no problem with that given the fact I'm not interested in taking salmon for table fare to begin with.

I think the first 2 miles should be closed.

The problem with that is that they are an industrial setup into which the needed fish swim if they get them at the hatchery.  Going out and netting or having locals "angle" for them as they did a few years back requires labor and additional time, and they could still have a problem between where they get them and the hatchery.

While I can get on the net here , I notice you don't make many friends in high places like ST . It seems like the same ole story about how it's OK to line, lift or hook "aka , snag" a fish because everyone else does so it's acceptable for them to as they have perfected the art while staying so called " legal " .
I'm beating the same drum as you and chose not to follow the sheep.
In retort however , you have no idea as to how many times I have beat that drum over the years to the agencies . I finally gave up and chose a different path , one which releases me from the river and more on the focus of the lake .
Yes it's one and the same fishery but different agendas on sportsmanship .
I will leave the trib guys alone and quite possibly the entire region as well very soon .

Good luck , but then again your L-13 and Neil is still rockin in the free world at 71 years young

Hey guys, no need to worry about netting fish to save the egg count. The ground was already semi saturated before this front moved in yesterday. As of now local flow gauges are off the charts. Our near year long drought is over :)

Wish I could say the same for SE Penna.,we are getting ZERO rain here and my pond is down 5' as I speak.I think the last rainfall we had here was back in May.Did they open the LFZ ? Does n't really matter to me as I wont be in the SR area again anytime soon:)
