Depends on the action too.  I have a Slower action 9wt that I feel is at it's limits for bigger salmon and a faster action one that is a brute. Both 9ft same brand 2pc.  As PA says keep you hand on the cork and You will be fine. Use a reasonable leader too.

It would, but  8' and 9's are better.

You can get away with a 7 weight but may kill a king during the fight.  Eight weight, in a 10 foot length, is ideal, imo.  Nine weights land those kings quickly but will likely be too much for coho and steelies and therefore will spoil some of the fun.
