It really varies with conditions and mood of fish! I've had great success with Joe's Flies, but my technique might vary from the way many fish them. Usually I use a barrel swivel and attach about a 4lb leader 12" - 24" depending on conditions!

Above, the barrel swivel, place 2-3 split shots depending on current, depth of water etc, hold your rod tip high (I use a long rod)and let the current present your offering.

One particular time, I fished a fresh stocked hole surrounded by many other anglers who were having little success with a variety of baits and lures. Finally, I took my Joe's Fly off and put on a CP Swing and caught my limit to everyone's ammazement including my own! God liked me that day! Tight lines!

Rooster Tails-good old white works well for me.
Joes Flies- Brown dressing with the gold blade, white/grey with a silver blade and the one that looks like a bumble bee.
I also like little daredevel and similar spoons in various colors, but they gotta be small.

I always used a white with a silver blade.I've done well on 1/12 or 1/8 oz Kastmaster in gold or silver.I should also say alot of my Trout fishing was at Justus Lake.

Best roostertail ever is the 1/8th ounce brown, brass blade. Rainbow trout, yellow coachdog, firetiger, black gold flake, black tinsel, green tinsel, and most recently copper blade brown- outfished other roostertail 3-1, We watched a brookie swim past the other roostertail to take the copper blade after 2 guys fished that hole with 12 trout in it for 5 minutes, with 2 different roostertail colors before I made a cast! Pretty amazing.

brown rooster tails will double as good trout lures in cloudy water and great smallie and bigmouth bass lures in the bigger sizes.

A good alternative is the bang-tail. If you can find them. The ball bearing swivel reduces line twist.
Also try a jake spoon (similar to super duper).
