Hey all,
Me and a few buddies are doing a 3 day trip in October to Oak Orchard.

First time going! I've been looking around for some flies I can tie up to use. I have single eggs tied that I use for Steelhead in Erie, but I don't think the size 16 to 18 hooks will fly with salmon lol. Also started to tie up some egg sucking leeches.

Any tips are appropriated!

Never fished the Oak but have fished the SR for 30+ yrs.Tie those egg flies on size 12 heavy hooks,pink.red,chartruse.Prince,pheasant tail, and flash back nympths in size 10.Various streamers and wooly buggers in size 10-8.The leaches should be good!

I like sucker spawn, size 10, in pink, white and orange.  I've had my best success using a single white egg around size 10.

I don't target salmon on the Oak.  I regard that as a stream for big browns and steelies.

Thanks all.

I don't want to resort to Russian tactics on my first trip. So I'll skip the trebs and lead, lol.

Strange as it seems I agree with Chardist.
If you are just looking for numbers of fairly hooked fish what he wrote will do a good job.

Spring's Wigglers always worked good in the Oak.  Fuzz on a big hook seems to be the popular fly in the SR in October, but those guys are all lining the fish anyway, it is not just Russians, pretty much everyone from south of the NYS line is a poacher.  Unless you already haver a room booked, you'll have more to worry about with getting a place to stay in October.  If you go to the SR in September and can get down river (pay to play), buggers, comets, streamers in bright colors can often get smashed by the early kings.  Also, tie some hot pink flies (the Cardinelle has been good for me) for cohoes, they might just blow through where you are fishing and they do like some pink.
