I honestly wish they would check at the tourneys.  I have a 15hp kicker on my flat bottom aluminum bass boat and when a vee bottom with a 9.9, 15, 18, or 20hp fly past me like I'm sitting still it kinda gets the blood boiling.  I know my boat weights a little with the decking and the big motor, however there is no way a true 9.9 or even a 15 should blow past me and get the vee bottom up on plane.

A law is a law and should be enforced.  I know people break laws, even knowing there are consequences, but they need to be enforced like traffic laws.

As was already posted..
I also have a 14' "shallow V" hull with a 15 hp Yamaha. I have a 7' casting deck made from 3/4 plywood and 2x4's .. deep cycle battery, and 6 gallon fuel tank.. On a calm day I get get close to 23 MPH.. (GPS speed)...With my gf aboard I can do around 17 MPH.. Yes, my boat will get up on plane with out a problem.. But normally you will see me at idle..1 to 1.8 MPH depending on the wind / waves..

When they came out with the 20hp limit I traveled clear to Mass. to buy a 20hp Merc 2 stroke which is an 87 motor.
I allways did want more power on my 14' v bottom. I fish Georgian Bay in Ontario and it sure is nice to have the extra power.

I was out at Pymy last weekend and the fish commision was there for approx 2 hours but did not check any motors.

They did check some livewells. My motor is a 28 hp with 20 stickers and he and I talked for approx 5 minutes while I secured my boat. He never even looked at my motor. They were acutally there both days and never checked any motors either day.

I always just cruise at approx 15 MPH so I dont draw any attention and they have never bothered me.

Most of the Johnson Evinrude engines are just about impossible to figure out. The engines are identical from 20 - 35 hp except for the carb. They would have to measure the throat of the carb to tell for sure. The mercs however are 3 cylinder above 20hp and the Fish Commission does know that and will bust you.

Incorrect, I own a mercury 25 hp and it is a 2 cylinder. In fact merc made 2 cylinder motors in 35hp 40hp and 60hp. In fact the 60hps are not terribly bigger than the 25hp.

Where merc motrs really get confusing is they made a 2cylinder 40hp and 3 cylinder 40hp and a 4 cylinder 40hp.

Yes I see that is correct. I guess what I am trying to point out is that the Fish Commission knows to look at the Merc motors stickered at 20 hp and if it is 3 cylinders they know it is a fake.

I agree, a 3 cylinder motor is definatly not 20hp and under. That would be a very fast reference for checking, alot faster than running serial numbers...

I would not like to be an officer who would get assigned to run serial numbers, because some people may have bought what they thought was a 20hp but was really a 25 and they get stung for somthing they thought was legal
