$$ Complete Pin set up ?

I been interested in getting one, where can I get a one without spending hundreds of bucks. I always try to get the best I can afford, but the prices I've seen on these are pretty high, any chance of getting a rod & reel combo for under $100 ?

I was also recently looking around for a cp outfit and the cheapest place for a okuma sheffield reel that i found was $179 i believe at gander mt. Okuma does make a cheaper model the advanta that was about $30 less. From there you can go up to $600 just for a reel.

For a rod a found a 12 foot crappie rod also from gander that was $40. I compared it to a 13 foot long sheffield rod that was priced at $199 and the rods had a similar bend/flex to them. I went ahead and bought it and on the 2 trips i made with it the 25 steelhead i landed didn't seem to care that it was a crappie rod. At no time did i feel overmatched but the biggest fish may have been 25 inchs. We'll see how it does next year. It came with a year guarantee and they said i could return it if i didn't like it.

I am also satisfied with the sheffield reel.

It can't really be done for under a 100.  The okuma has the cheapest reel and its right around 110 plus rod backing line etc.  Your better off to look around and find something decent cause if you do actually catch an interest in it your going to want something better then what you got.  My 2 cents.....

I put 50 yards of 80? pound dacron catfish line as backing and 75 yards of trilene xt solar as a main line. There is a better line for a cp. which is siglon and probably others but several sites recommended using cheap line till i got the casting line down.

I can't cast very far yet but i was able to cover most parts of elk on the two trips i made. If you check out flyandfloatfishing.com or quest.com they can tell and show you a lot about the casting process. I've had many tangles while trying to cast to date but i've never had to cut the line yet. I think the trilene xt being pretty stiff helps with the untangling process.

Hopefully some of the guys that know a lot more about a c.p. will chime in but so far i like it. There are usually some cheap ones on ebay from the ukraine and one called blackfish but i don;t think they are much good but i could be wrong.

One thing you need to learn quick is that there is no drag and if you forget to put the clicker on to hike etc. you can get a ton of line off the reel in a hurry.

Typically the clickers aren't strong enough to hold.  slide a hair scrunchie up the handle to the reel foot.  When going mobile, stretch it to one of the handles on the reel.

you can put it on a noodle rod or any rod,the problum will be balancing it.they do get heavyafter a long day,but has always been worth it.Don't skimp on the cost, the Okuma Sheffield can be found for less than 300,and well worth it. I use mine all the time, very versital and deadly way to fish.Flyandfloatfishing.com,all your answers are there.

I bought an Okume Sheffield in 2006 after reading reviews on Quest.com My opinion is for the money, it is the way to go. I am addicted to pin fishing and I am now looking to make another purchase. Don't know which way I will go, but the Sheffield is the perfect real for beginners or for those who do not fish often.

I have a custom 3 piece with adventa reel. $625.00 if interested. Great burl on the handle, titanium guides, etc. sweet piece. Will be getting pics up shortly. Only used 2 seasons in NY. Great setup, but need to get rid of things I don't have to have. rsmit@aol.com if interested.

Got my reel from the UK, cheap Blackfish from ebay, looks pretty good, smooth, got a nine foot whoopin stick made for crappie and got them all rigged up. Wanted to go cheap just to see if I'd like it B4 spending $200 on a reel. I'm going to try to go out in a few days.  I got 65 yrds fly line backing, 75-100 yrds 12lb Remington mono main line,4 lb Stren leader, weighted balsa floats, hooks, shots and ready to go.
Might try the river for some smallies or sauger 1st. won't use the 4lb there. wish me luck.

I practiced casting in the yard and had many tangles but they all came out without cutting the line. The tangles i got on the water seemed to come out easier when actually fishing. It seemed like the current would actually carry the loose tangled line away from me and left less at the reel to actually have to be worked loose.

I also looked at the blackfish reels but went with the sheffield. Hopefully it will work out good for you.

The only thing bad i noticed about the 12 foot crappie rod is i wasn't getting the casting distance i thought i should. I'm not sure if it was the (1) rod (2) to light a float or (3) not starting the reel with a hard enough pull. The crappie rod was definately fun to fight the fish with though.

    Good luck with the smallmouths.

try holding your line off to the side with your free hand and allowing it to go off the reel to the side, you will get a greater distance and no snags

Guys, how do you cast ? Thats the ? for me. My reel has a free spool "trootting" mode and a clicker, the only thing so far that I don't like with the Blackfish is, you can not switch it from left handned, without having to reel in backwards, so I now have to use my right hand like most baitcasters.. Thats why I only troll with BC's and not cast & retrieve.

yeah my pin is not reversible, I've switched over many fly reels B4 and this CP reel is not reversible at least not to my knowledge. I could just reel it in on the free spool method, but the clicker only works on way.
