YEAH GUYS, JUST JOKING WITH YOU. THOUGHT MORE PEOPLE WOULD JUMP IN WITH A TIRADE.  BOUT 10 YEARS BACK I CAME ACROSS A VIETNAMISE GUY AT CHAUTAUQUA CREEK WHO HAD ABOUT 40 SMOLTS IN A PAIL. HE SAID THEY WERE DELICIOUS. I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE LAW TO HIM BUT HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. CALLED THE LOCAL WARDEN LATER [NO CELL PHONES BACK THEN] HE SAID HE KNEW THE GUY AND HAD ALREADY CITED HIM ONCE FOR KILLING AND EATING SONG BIRDS. ALSO MISSING CATS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.    GLEN

although the songbirds and smolt are bad, we could use a few more like him to get rid of the cats!

Eh, there's a name for this, it's called "trolling."  Starting a post for know other reason than to start trouble is pretty stupid quite frankly.  The yearly "people are killing smolts" debate is sure to pop up soon enough.

I find it kind of ironic. You all back a man who pounds a couple thousand crappie a year. All be it he may be an ok guy. But as soon as someone touches a precious smolt they are a good for nothin smolt killer. Hate to say it if they are of legal size and anglers are staying within the limit. What's the beef. Seems just a little hypocritical to me. A fish scab is a fish scab no mater what species of fish.

Smolts are small fish and can be a pain when fishing the tribs in the spring, BUT they are the future of the steelhead program.  If you want to fish for steelies, it is best to protect the smolt.  As for keeping smolt, it would have to be a very big one to be legal.  I have not seen many 9 inch smolts in the tribs.

Another issue is that smolts do not reproduce.  Comparing crappies to smolt is really a red herring.  Crappies are very prolific fish that naturally reproduce and in small ponds or lakes will be stunted if you don't remove a significant number per year.

Whatever your preferred fish to catch is, as fisherman we need to respect each others choice of fish and the resources that support those fish.  For steelhead fisherman, the smolt are very important.  They are not just trash fish, a nuisance, or food for walleye, they are future steelhead.  Please respect them and those who fish for them.

Not advocating killing smolts at all. Just seemed funny when some fella questioned why any one would keep 2500 crappies in a year. A bunch of people jumped on him and said hey if the fella that caught all those fish was legal and within bag limits its ok.
