Do I have a Problem???

Was working on the setup for the big boat today.  By the time I was done I had both boards out in the yard on both sides ( I am building a new mast and wanted to check the height) so then I ran some releases down with lines on the rod to check placement for the rod holders I am going to get.  After that I was setting the down east rod holders and the downrigger mounts on the back board.

As I looked over my neighbor was laughing hysterically.  As he walked over he asked WTF was wrong with me.  He had never seen any one work so hard at fishing in thier yard.

As I looked around I realized I had set out a full erie spread.

Ended up with a lot of snags reeling the equipment in.

Should I seek counseling?

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Put a pully on a high branch and run a line through it with a ten pound-no make that 20 pound weight.
Attatch the other end to a short heavy rod.
Sit in the boat and practice fighting a fish.
That should make the neighbors leave you alone!

You might not need to do this for walleye but everytime I go on an ocean charter I swear before the next time I will do this!

OH and to add more icing to the cake.... I had a dream last night where I was fishing and an Orvis rep (some beautiful woman) walked over to me while I was fishing and said..."Mr Hoffman, we need you to come to the tent and give a presentation on the zero g."

This fishing addiction is getting out of hand.

Happens to the best of us musky.  Best bet on your planer boards are you are not really going to know where they are going to be running in the water until they are in the water...not to mention they change as you make turns.

I remember fishing in my driveway when i was 10 or 11 in my little 16ft boat.

I have often put on full gear on my 22' trophy giving it 25 rod holders and 2 downriggers with a planer board mast...  Then thrown on 8 rods on the roof and 2 in the riggers just to take pictures...lol

I dont think you are alone in being a little excessive about your fishing gear or your boat...

How about a fishing report? I want to know whether or not I should drag my boat to your yard.

In all honesty, you don't have any more of a problem that I've got. And I've always thought I should seek counseling. But I don't, because that would cut into my fishing time. And there's never enough fishing time. Besides, show me a counselor that fishes and I'll show you a counselor who's opinion I'd listen too. But then he probably couldn't help me much anyway cause rather than counseling, he'd probably be going fishing with me.

I blew out a hernia on March 29th while I was working on my boat. Had to have surgery for it two days later. I'm restricted on what I can do right now. But screw that, this past weekend I was working on the boat. Granted, I was taking it easy. But still, I got to get it ready for the season.

BTW, I'll be lowering some cannon balls in my driveway sometime this week. After three years of owning my current boat, I finally got a chance to run the wiring for my electrics yesterday. I've been using the manuals for the past three years. My kids with their baseball, baseball, baseball, and more baseball, greatly limits my time for getting anything accomplished on the boat.  And running the wiring for the electric downriggers has been low on my priority list. Yes, as little time as that takes, my time is that limited. But if I manage catch some nice eyes in my driveway, I'll post a fishing report.

Who knows, with gas prices going the way they are, our boats might end up becoming permanent driveway ornaments someday. Just have to dredge a pond in the driveway behind the boat and stock it with fish.

Shame to spend all that money on a boat to park in your driveway and never use...

I'm sure all fishermen have had those moments when they realize how stupid something that makes perfect sense to us looks to a non-fishermen.

My neighbor thought i was crazy when I was testing out the bend of my new catfish rod by tying the line to a bench and loading it up.  He really thought I had gone mad when I tested the reel by tying it to a stick and proceeded to challenge one of the neighborhood kids to tug-of-war!  (BTW that reel is practically a winch.  I could crank the 8 year old across the lawn no matter how hard he fought back.)

Have fun with those moments...they keep you from being even weirder!

I did the same thing with my 40lb class ocean setup and a friends kid.
My sister also caught me tying her dog to an ocean setup.
My nephew just turned 4 and can expect to be reeled in soon-probably use a 20lb setup.

That reminds me of a test we did in canada one night arger about a case of beer.
We were having the age old musky fishermen debate as to whether a musky sets the hook on itself with the strike, or if a good hook set can make a difference.
Long story short, at 20 feet with super line and amazingly sharp hooks, My dad held a bucktail in his hand while his brother set the hook repeatedly across the room.  Never drew a drop of blood.   I am pretty sure we have problems, but at least I can claim it is genetic.

Same difference . I tie a 1 lb rawhide on my trolling setup & fight my 60lb lab . Neighbor thought I was a wacko . Told em the next best thing to fightn king salmon .....Both dog & I get our exercise... Don't knock it until you try it ; it's alot of fun especially drinking Jim Beam in the back of the boat in the driveway ! Only time I can drink out fishin in the 24footer no worries about a BUI. I don't think any of us are quite right in the head

My 135# Chessie is a lot of fun fightin' too.  A TON of fun on braid (I wouldn't dare run the wire for fear of kinking that expensive stuff up!).  I keep trying to teach him how to make those 4 and 500 foot runs that the big kings do though...

    Here's one for ya....

My brother had a HUGE Great Dane that would yank your arm off if you tried to walk him. So one day I decided to hook him up with a chest harness. I dragged out my 9/0 Penn that I used shark fishing on the beaches.

I hooked that dog up and COULD NOT even stop him...lol

Man my drag was screamin' !
His neighbor came out and looked at me with that broom stick of a rod doubled over and smiling from ear to ear. I thought he was gonna call the cops on me..lol I don't know who had more fun..me or the dog.

Till this day that dang dong won't walk on a leash!

When my daughters were 3 or so I would tie my line to them and let them run in the yard to set my drag for salmon season.  The kids loved it but I'm pretty sure the neighbors were thinking of calling Children and youth...

    Guys,
I've always found that the best "bait" for: crawlers: anything bright and shiny moved slowly, for todlers: 1/4 of a snickers bar dragged erratically across a vinyl floor, for 4 year olds: hot wheels or Dora the explorer (they strike hard and fast and really put up a fight.)  For those in the 40-90 pound class: usually a Mcdonalds' gift card fluttered in their direction and for the really mature females any credit card dragged slowly across a bar.  Hope this helps

Just face it we're all crazy.  They should hand out those one free coupons for a mental health screening with every fishing license.

I was told a long time ago when I was a kid that if you wanted the same experience from boating and fishing without acctually doing it...  Go out in your back yard and dig a giant hole.  Then throw your paycheck into it every week.

    What were we talking about???

Oh yeah, I don't like to take all that time to test out my stuff.  I would much rather prefer to wait until I'm in the middle of the lake to find that something doesn't work.  Or until I have that 20lb king on that the drag on my reel is getting a little worn.  That's always fun, I end up looking like Quint on the bow of the Orca as we run after a screeming king.
