trolling vs jigging for eyes

as we are all well aware the price of gas is a killer. trolling is becoming more difficult due to this. (limited funds to keep filling the tank along with the 80 mile haul just to get to erie.) how effective is jigging for eyes any suggestions/comments would be helpful. never tried this before.

3 words....FOUR STROKE KICKER...My 9.9 honda all day couldnt burn 3 gallon of gas trolling 10hours if it tried.  These things are paying for themselves with the cost of gas...

Jigging or casting for walleyes does work, but it has its limits as well.  Trolling allows you to zero into the strike zone and pull multiple lines triggering alot of fish thus getting done faster...

My suggestion Store your boat in Erie to save on the tow up (most 1/2 ton trucks get in the 12-15 mpg range when towing) Get yourself one more extra fishing buddy to help accomidate the cost....

On average it costs me possibly $30 per day in fuel to run my boat...Not counting my truck...We can only hope that next year things start coming back down...but that could be wishful thinking.

Jigging for walleye is highly successful, but its more of a river game than a lake thing.  Trolling is gonna be your best bet for lakes.  With the walleye in lake erie most are suspended and moving thats why guys troll for them.  River walleye are usually close to the bottom no matter what area they are in unless its nightime feeding.  Just my opinion....

marabou jigs with a leech work good on smaller lakes (im keeping my mouth shut on which ones though) but on erie, i cant imagine it being more productive than trolling...i usually use a slip bobber..

Jigging is tougher mostly because of the weather.  It is difficult to keep a constant boat speed and hence to keep your jigs at the desired depth.   I have read a couple of articles very recently on some new techniques that may change all of that.....

There are a lot of people that have success drifting, I believe some charter boats actually do this as well.  The downfall, is you are limited with the number of rods you can fish due to tangles.

I agree CB. i can troll all day with my merc 9.9 and be affordable. I hustled a couple of my buddies. I told them ill buy the gas for the boat if they buy the food. LOL. I ate real good all day for $25.

80 miles. I wish it was 80 miles. I bought a Dodge Dually with a Crew Cab I can take 5 guys in the truck comfotably and the boat holds 6 legaly. We all split the bill. I get @ 16.5 mpg  towing the boat if i keep my foot out of it.

I agree, trolling Lake Erie and jig your local river. you will probably get more fish for your $.

Drifting a bottom bouncer rig with a harness or a floating jig and crawler will catch as many fish, if not more at times. Plus you can use lighter rods and actualy feel the fish..lol

However it does catch you more junk fish....

I HATE trolling, so I tried drifting crawler harnesses on 3-way rigs last year.  I fished til I ran out of worms.  Caught nothing but sheephead and gobys.  I did have fun though.  Spent the rest of the day drifting for smallies.  Gonna give it a try again this year.

It all depends on the time of year for me.  I like to jig in the spring out in the Western Basin and shallower waters and reefs.  And flat line troll.  Thats a blast and I'm headed there next week.  During the summer, I like to troll...the faster I can get them, the better.  I have to admit, its all about the meat run then for me.  And finally, jigging/drifting may produce as many fish, but not as many in as little time.  I think the more water you cover in less time, the more fish you will catch in less time, in most cases that is.  I'll hopefully be wetting the vessel this weekend...catching fish or not, I'll just be happy to be back out there!  Tight Lines!

Spoons work...you just gota pull em faster....i hate the little 2inch spoons...give em something to look at and pull standard 3-4in stuff...bigger baits usually mean bigger fish...

save on gas bro to keep coming out on other days. catch my limit and go after something else such as perch or smallies. drifting is more relaxing  over trolling anyhow, dont ya think.

    3 words....FOUR STROKE KICKER...

Do 4 strokes 9.9's really get that much better gas mileage trolling than a 2 stroke of the same size?  I couldn't imagine a 2 stroke taking much gas for a full day of trolling.  I'd imagine you are going to pay for the extra oil, and likely have to replace spark plugs more often.  I couldn't see them "paying for themselves" though.  Unless you meant, trolling with the main motor.  I'm new to the boating thing, but 9.9 2 strokes don't seem to use much gas at all?

In 8hrs of trolling if i burn 2 gallons of gas i would be very suprised....its quiet doesnt stink, and is very dependable...

I guess if you are out trolling a lot, then the fume thing would likely be worth the extra expense in itself.  I wish they were cheaper up front.  Anything in my price range would likely not be in the reliable category.

Not only that pork, but they sell these new high thrust 8hp motors that are even more fuel sippers than the older style 9.9.  They throw a bigger prop and create alot more thrust at lower RPMs.

You can get a used 4 stroke for under $1500 if you search around....

Drifting is the best for me I cant seem to get my 2.3 litre  to go below 3 mph Had a 6 horse kicker but is need of repair. When I hit on to the walleye I GPS the spot and will drift through nail a couple. When it slows down real up and move back to the original gps spot and start all over again, when its hot I usally pick up two per run. It is more fun to reel up a fish that has not been waterlogged by a rigger that didnt pop.  To me Its more sport fishing than just trolling around dragging meat. You get more play out of a fish drifting than a moving boat in a hurry to throw another one in the box.

Jig sonars over suspended fish. Find them on your depthfinder then use a line counter to get the depth. Use a 6'6 or 7' rod thats a little stiff and real sensitive. Use a braid like spiderwire or powerpro. You can be done as fast as you can jig sometimes. I think vib-es are the best because you can get them colored but silver buddys have about as good an action.
