Bullheads

It won't be long and the peepers will start sounding off in the evenings.  When I lived in NY, one of my favorite pasttimes was to fish for bullheads into the night.  Are there any decent spots around western PA where bullheads are quite readily available from shore?  My children are now old enough and I would really like to take them out chasing these minikitties (someplace they can get into without being treacherous).  Anyway, thanks for any info you guys might be able to provide.

We used to night fish for Bullheads at Canadohta Lake. Fished from shore at the PFBC launch area.

edinboro lake, take a can or two of tuna on heavy fishing line and poke hundreds of little holes in it... throw it out there to where about you will be fishing and eventually the fish will be there, anything works really, chicken livers on small treble hooks fished on the bottom are a good bet...

No, if you look at the FAQ's on the PFBC ,it says its okay to chum, but you cant get carried away so much that you litter...

I'm with you!!  I LOVE bullheads. nothing seems as good as a combination of action, easiness, and good eating.

I'm further to the west, so I've been scoping warren county for them.

The trick is to find a dense population of them and a population that is big enough to be worth it.  The commision doesn't worry too much about the panfish/catfish crowd (espacially out here in trout country west),  SO they are either well-fitted enough to the ecology to stay dominant as the PFG manages for everything else, OR they occupy a sterile niche and never achieve a happy size or dense population.

You might start by going through the fish surveys that PFG does...

BTW, has anyone tried chautaqua lake,NY ?  are there alot, or just a few here or there?

I can vouch for shenango, although really shenango is in a class by itself, best channel catfish population in this part of the state...   I've caught them in Arthur -- usually too small.  PFG talks up Wilhelm (alot)...  Those a long ways west might be interested to know that the East branch **** towards Elk county has a great population.  Keystone Lake, armstrong county...  Mahoning lake, jefferson... again a great catfish lake...

hmmm.  well, I really like them and I've at times travelled a long ways to tie into them.  So if others have experiences- I'm interested.  Just remember a fish here and there... Nope, and your kid will surely be dissapointed.  you want big, dense populations....

griffon it all depends on what southwestern part of pa your looking to fish. I have quite a few places in somerset and cambria county I could list for you for great bull fishing.

Isnt throwing a CAN into the water, regardless, littering? Last time I checked it was. Chumming the water consists of throwing food out into the water, not aluminum or tin cans full of food.

    Jgut,

It would be littering if you left the can there when you were done fishing,. You notice he said tied to heavy line ( for retrieval, and disposal when the fishing is done ).

Cross Creek has tons by the old covered bridge area. Steelydaze, when you say across from the church on Arthur do you mean on that same shore or across the lake?
