Presque Isle launch

Hi guys, new to this forum.  We are coming a distance (Olean) to fish Presque Isle for Crappies at ice out for the first time.  Any suggestions or help as to the best launch would be greatly appreciated!!   Will probably be coming down East Bayfront Pkwy from 90.  Thanks in advance.

I'd launch from Lampe.  If you're on the bayfront traveling w you'll want to go straight as the bayfront conector changes to the bayfront parkway.  Lampe is outside the bay, but it's a quick trip through the channel to the bay.

Chestnut St. launch is not to bad as long as your boat is not to big. It is right off the Bayfront highway west of State St.

There are 2 concrete launches on Presque Isle one is in the Marina Lake the other at Niagra launch . There are also several other places to drop in like the third parking lot on your right after entering the Park stop at the Ranger station for more info about 3 miles out on your right. John

    Thanks guys,
I am bringing the kids up just for the day weather permitting.  If anyone could point us in a general area or depth to start, it would be much appreciated.

If you're putting in at Chestnut you may want to bring a chainsaw. Still iced over as of mid last week. Put in at Marina Lake at the park. Don't put in at Lampe, it's too risky. That channel and around the ramp can get nasty in a North/Northeast wind.

Follow 79 untill you get to 12th street. Go west on 12th st.
Take a right at Pennsula Drive. This will take you to the park. Keep going until you come to your first right. (a few miles down) This road will take you to the ramp.

    Good luck!

    Depths to fish?

One day 5 foot, next day 15 foot. It's still early but they are staging. Find the group of boats in the known areas and you may catch a few.

If you are bring the kids than I would fish Marina Lake. The gills are shallow and eating well.

If your fishing Presque Isle bay, you don't want to launch at Lampe. That would mean you would have to go out into the Lake and come into the bay through the channel. If your fishing the bay, you'd be better off launching at either the state park marina or niagra boat launch. Both are in Presque Isle state park. If you are fishing out in the lake, then depending on where your fishing, Lampe may be a good location to launch. By water, it's 16 miles west of Northeast, PA. To get there by land, take bayfront drive to port access rd. Make a left on Port Access Rd. Continue until you can't go any further (roughly 1 mile, maybe slightly less). Make the right into the park. Make another right into Lampe parking lot. The ramp is all the way down at the end.

There are some other ramps in the bay. There's one on the south shore, but I've never used it.

Hey I was just thinking about something.....

Why are you driving all the way to Presque Isle to fish for crappies? You'll pass by 10 good crappie lakes on your way here.

Ummm, a good friend moved up there last year and I thought it a great excuse to take the kids and him out fishing as we used to fish alot together.  No better way to "catch up" than while fishing.  Thanks for the welcome and the help.  I fish mostly walleyes on Kinzua (home waters) and ALOT out of Barcelona in Westfield.  Enjoying this site!

Well, fishing both Kinzua and Erie, it's hard to beat Erie right now with the numbers of fish.  I think Kinzua's numbers are down a little right now with less limits being taken this past season. However, 3 or 4 years ago, it was really good to exceptional.  The bait population continues to grow on the zoo and that should help.  They've upped the walleye stocking in the past two years and that should help too.  Same old Zoo though, the fish come harder, but what a beautiful place to fish.
