Lockedsmolt stocking & steelhead returns

smolt stocking & steelhead returns

saw the fish commission stocking smolts in sterretania yesterday and got to wondering.
 
between the fish commission & clubs in the erie area, about how many smolts get stocked in the tribs each year?
 
and, has the fish commission ever put out any solid estimates on the number that return as adults?  anyone ever seen or heard of a creek by creek breakdown of that number? 
 
just curious, not looking to start a debate on whether it's too many or not enough.

    Close to a zillion I think. As for returns around a billion.

    swinger, that sounds about right.  i checked the fish comm. website & found that it's around 1.2 million stocked.
     
    couldn't find any numbers on the returns though.

    I think their goal is a trillion for next year including the brown trout!  With a gazillion return hopeful!!

    Have heard 8-10% return.
     
    Also, 10-12%.
     
    Fish stray a bunch so it'd be difficult to say based on stocking numbers per stream, that those amount of fish return. 
     
    Ideally, if fish return at 10% and Elk gets 200,000 stocked, then 20,000 would return.  That's probably a bit inaccurate because of jacks, a few older fish, and strays.
     
    Whatever the case, the tribs get a lot!

    1 non native species is 1 to many- but then what would my walleyes eat LOL--- KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!

    Both Penna and Ohio are thought to recieve 20-25% returns of 2-3 year old fish (22"-25") with a 4-5 year old fish being rare due to catch/kill mortality rates in both the lake and stream. Salmon return rates in the 80's were listed as 1/2 of 1% for Chinook and 7% for the Coho hence their being discontinued by both states. Ohio's steel program was on the bubble until 96' when we purchased the little Manistee strain from Michigan which immediately resulted in a 10% gain in return rates up from 7-10% when compared to the previously stocked London strain. I have heard as much as a 30-35% return. Whatever the case, it can be said that we are experiencing what most consider the best Steelhead fishing in the great lakes region since it's inception and first stockings in the late 1800's.  Enjoy it and respect it.
